Comments in source segments

Hi

I was trying to enter the comments into the source segment and wasn't able to do it.

I'm using Studio 2021 and Microsoft Word WordprocessingML v. 2 File type.

I checked the help and I found the topic  Working with commnets  https://docs.sdl.com/813470/515200/sdl-trados-studio-2021-sr1/working-with-comments wher it says:

Comments in source segments

If you have comments in the original source file, they are displayed in the source segments when you open a file for translation, by default. However these comments cannot be amended and new comments cannot be made to source segments.

You can also choose to extract comments from the original file for translation in SDL Trados Studio. Once translated, they will appear as comments again in the final translated file. You can choose to do this in the File Types > Microsoft Word 2007-2013 file type settings.

Note: Comments in source segments are only supported for Microsoft Word 2007-2013 (*.docx) file types.
As far as I can see this file type has been removed in recent versions of Studio so I'm wondering:
- where can I get it?
- how could I add a comment to the source segment?
I hope I'm not alone with this question.

  • I wonder if you're misreading this?  Your question was:

I was trying to enter the comments into the source segment and wasn't able to do it.

    You then shared this:

If you have comments in the original source file, they are displayed in the source segments when you open a file for translation, by default. However these comments cannot be amended and new comments cannot be made to source segments.

Note the last part.  These comments cannot be amended and new comments cannot be made to source segments.  This was never possible and still isn't.  The feature is the same in the newer filetype.  So I can do thi for example because the comment was already in Word:

Trados Studio screenshot showing an error message 'This segment has a comment in source' with an arrow pointing to the comment icon in the source segment column.

But I can't add more.  No real change since this article in 2015...

  • Hi Paul,

Indeed it seems I was misreading this part on comments and "didn't see" the explicit reference you highlighted.

The reason is that I have a case where customer works with several revisors and editors who would most of the time enter comments and revisions in the target segment, but they have cases where there is a feedback related to a source word or part of source segment and they need a simple way to annotate/comment  that.

Hence, me misreading the "source comments" more in the light of my needs as in the context of "comments already present in the source document" prior to processing it in Studio.

Client has been using Trados 2007 unitl recently and all thier processes and workflows benefit the flexibility of bilingual Trados Workbench documents.

I appreciate that allowing users to add new comments to the source segments could cause all sorts of issues and is therefore not supported.

And yes, it's been a while since I really looked into the comments as much as I'm now, so thank you for the reply and clear&understandable reply.

I glimpsed over your article from 2015 and I, obviously, need to refresh my knowledge.

    Thank you.
