In the File tab -top left side - or Project Settings, if you only want to apply this to the project, not as a general rule - go to Options>Filetypes: Microsoft Word, - your word version - go to Common option and tick the checkbox indicating "Retain Studio target comments in the target file"

And confirm the changes with OK:

Sure enough, that did the trick! Puzzling that this would get unchecked--it exported the comments by default so not sure what happened, but I now have that box checked for all file types I work with.

Not your fault -- the default behavior changed in Trados Studio 2021, affecting a lot of us.

Hi, thanks for the solution Oana - I've been struggling with this since the last SR update...

It works fine now for one document at a time (after changing the setting in the current document). However, I would like to have this setting by default, and it doesn't work. i.e. the general rule doesn't apply for (old nor) new documents. I did restart Trados afteer changing the setting... 

Can you help any further?

To make it permanent, instead of selecting the option in your Project Settings>Filetypes, you have to go to File tab -top left corner- >Options>Filetypes. Select the option for your file version and confirm with OK. This should then make it permanent for all your projects, not just for the current one.

Hi Oana, Thanks but that's what I did before asking for your help: I selected the option in the main Options and confirmed and restarted Trados, but comments do not show in the generated word document - unless I change the set up in the current document. Any clue how to make it permanent again (like before the SR update)?

the settings in Options that you change will apply for the next projects, they do not apply to the already in progress/active ones. So if you have selected all those in the global settings in File>Options, these changes will reflect on the new projects, not the current ones.

I am sorry to contradict you, but what you suggest is what I did - and the changes were not reflected in the new test project despite restarting Trados. Any other suggestions? Run a repair?

Are you using Project Templates?  Or maybe your default template is not the one using in File -> Options?  You may need to make this change in your templates as well.

What Paul says did the trick for me. I think you have to change the settings for each of your templates if you have separate templates set. HTH!
