Bilingual source file that requires partial translation in SDL Trados Studio Professional 2021

Hello, I have a transcript of an audio file that was spoken in English and Kiswahili. The client wants the Kiswahili parts to be translated into English and for English to remain as it has been spoken. Is there anyway of automatically copying the English segments into the translation as they are and leave only the Kiswahili to be translated? Or is there a way of analysing the content to find out how much of it actually needs translating? Apologies if this is a silly question - I've new to Trados. Thanks in advance.

  • So you have a Word document with a mix of two languages - this is not what is typically called a bilingual document in the world of translation as I know it.

There is no structure to that mix and you want to automatically identify which parts are which language, I hope I got that right.

That is not what Trados Studio is intended to do, but I find your situation interesting. I wrote a "bilingual" text, like a dialogue:

Screenshot of a Word document with a dialogue in two languages, English and German, without any visible errors.

I import it into Studio and let DeepL do a machine translation of everything:

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing the imported dialogue with English on the left and machine-translated German on the right, no errors visible.

Then I filter for segments where source and target are identical and revert the filter, so that I get all segments where source and target differ:

Screenshot of Trados Studio with a filter applied to show segments where source and target differ, highlighting segment 4 where German text differs.

You will see that segment 4 is German in the source but DeepL translated it into German again, using different words, so it is not identical anymore.

It's not a flawless method, but it might help you with your project.

    Hope it helps,

    Daniel
