Variables not appearing as placeables

I'm translating a long text about railway stations in the Netherlands. Obviously, the names of those stations come up regularly. There are also sentences like:

In Arnhem Centraal werd de reizigerstunnel vervangen door een reizigerstraverse.

(At Arnhem Centraal, the subway was replaced by a footbridge).

Later, we get:

In Alkmaar werd de reizigerstunnel vervangen door een reizigerstraverse.

If I understand correctly, adding "Alkmaar" as a variable should (a) cause the second occurrence to be pre-translated, with "Alkmaar" inserted in place of "Arnhem Centraal" and (b) cause "Alkmaar" to appear on the left as a placeable, i.e. underlined in blue.

Neither of these things is happening

How I created my variable list

I started off by using the Variable Manager plug-in to add a list of all Dutch stations to my variables list. The import worked beautifully, but none of the station names appeared as placeables.

Some of the station names contained apostrophes or hyphens, which I thought might be causing a problem, so I removed all the variables and just inserted Alkmaar, by hand.

Still no luck.

I re-indexed the TM and re-started Studio.

Still no luck.

And when I say "no luck", I mean that "Alkmaar" is not appearing as a placeable (underlined in blue) despite "Replace>Variables" being checked.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong? I currently have a variable list containing the one variable "Alkmaar", if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

  • Hi ,

Some months ago I did repro exactly your issue and in several occasions with different TM's. Also I remember that my TM's got corrupted in the sense that they didn't allow any more variables. I couldn't establish any cause-effect relationship so I gave up with Variables Manager app.

Since Wordbird app is in the the AppStore I have used it to insert variables. With Wordbird you can import an external variable list (pretty much like Variables Manager) or alternatively you can build the variables list while translating with a keyboard shortcut. I use the app mainly with the second approach and I never had any problems.

Just an idea in case nobody gives you (and me) any other ideas…

  • HI Jesús,

Thanks for getting back to me!

The problem doesn't seem to be the method used to insert variables (e.g. Variables Manager v. Wordbird v. manually), as I've tried it with just one variable, inserted manually, and that doesn't work either.

I may end up creating a MultiTerm termbase containing all the station names with English the same as Dutch; that won't cause them to be substituted in "nearly-100%" matches, but it will save my having to either retype them or copy/paste. Pity, because if I could get variables to work they'd be useful.

Bit sickening that such expensive software has so many bugs.

    All the best,

    Steve
