software translation file

Hi,

I need to translate the text of a new software for my company. I have a .xlsm file in which I need to extract the text that is in the "Microsoft Visual Basic, Applications Edition",

Screenshot highlighting the 'Microsoft Visual Basic, Applications Edition' title bar in an Excel file.

I'm not sure I can publish some image of the software, but I could send maybe privately .

I have no Idea how to do, i pre-translate the excel file and the text I need is not there.

I have tired to explain me in the best way. I hope someone can help me.

Thanks

  • ok, now I think I understand what you're doing... I think!  You've been asked to translate the translatable text only of the VB code accessible through the VB Editor you showed at the beginning?

So to translate it you'll probably need to create separate files for each of the VB scripts and then either manually add the translations carefully into the scripts where the text contains translatable strings only if there are not many, or create a custom filetype in Trados Studio to handle them.  If you do the latter there is no way we can help you with that without actually seeing the code.

I've actually never done this myself but I think it's doable.  For example I just copy/pasted a bit of code to create a VB module and I then exported it as a *.bas file:

Screenshot of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications showing the option to export a VB module as a .bas file.

Now I can handle this in Trados Studio:

Visual Basic code snippet for a subroutine named 'InsertMultipleColumns' in a module.

With a custom regex delimited text filetype to get this:

Trados Studio dialog box showing a custom regex delimited text filetype for handling VB script translation.

But I don't want to give you my rules because they almost certainly won't be suitable for the files you have.  You will need to do this yourself based on the content of the files.

Alternatively, seeing as this is a specialist task you could use Passolo which can handle BAS files easily:

PASSOLO interface displaying a list of strings extracted from a .bas file for translation.

If I was you I'd seriously consider not using a CAT for this part unless there is a lot of translatable text.  It may be much easier to translate your Excel file, save the target, and then go into each VB module and manually handle the translatable text.  But make sure you are absolutely certain that you know what is translatable text and what is not.

If these are complex modules and you are not sure then I'd advise you to engage a translator who is familiar with handling this type of work to help you, or work with the developer as he/she will certainly be able to help you identify the strings you should be changing.
