Trados 2021 runs in Background, but does not open on screen after update

Hi everybody,

I updated Trados to the latest  version, but now it does no longer appear on my screen. It runs in background processes, does not show on the task bar and I did not have any second screen activated.So attaching a monitor because it does show on one that is no longer there, is not possible. 

De- and reinstalling it or installing the previous version does not work either because it simply does not remove some hidden files and sends out the error "more current version is open." But I cannot close anything becuase I do not have any button to press.

I remember from an old version (2017 or so) that there is a possibility to delete something from the registry, but to do that I need the respective files.

Can somebody help urgently? Have been trying two days now from de- and reinstalling, changing licence, using fresh start... but nothing helps. By the way, no error message appears. It opens, the start window shows for an instance, then disappears and nothing happens.

  • I've have the exact same problem. My latest working version was 16.1.4.4184. Up until then, updates were no problem. But ever since 16.1.7.4397 came out this year, everything has been a hassle. First, it wouldn't install due to error message "more current version is open". An IT friend of mine worked 3h on this to fix this problem. Once done, Trados wouldn't open - the window popped up for just a second before it disappeared. We've been trying everything - restart, reboot, registry changes (don't ask me what exactly, I'm not an expert here), God knows what. Nothing helped, so I went back to the old version.

    Then came update version 16.1.8.4404 - same problem.

    Weirdly, the program is running in the task manager but that's just about it. So I plowed my way through blogs, doing everything they suggested (turning off autostart programs, firewall, etc.). Nothing worked, and now I'm back to version 16.1.4.4184 again, which is working just fine.

    I'm hoping the next update will fix this bug...
