Displaying Arabic numbers in Trados

Hi there,

I am managing a project in a few languages, one of them being Arabic. My project contains a number of digits, which need to be converted to Arabic digits. The translator is working with another CAT tool but she is translating the .sdlxliff file. She has properly translated the digits as she provided me a screenshot. She also sent me a bilingual Word document, where the digits appear in Arabic after setting Word properly.

My problem is that I can't get the digits to display correctly in Trados, which means that when I generate the target, the digits are also in English and not in Arabic. We are translating .PSD files. What's more puzzling is that if I copy the Arabic digit from Word and paste it in Trados, it automatically converts to English. I have used Arabic World and have also tried another type of Arabic. I get similar results with both.

I am assuming that I am missing a setting somewhere in Trados but haven't been able to find which one.

Could someone help with this issue?

This is a screenshot of Trados:

And this is what the translator has translated:

Thank you,

Sarah

  • Just to add here that this is a Windows and not a Studio setting. You can achieve the same result in Studio ( screen shot below) by actually changing the Regional format in Region settings of Windows. If you choose Arabic(Egypt) and restart Studio you will have the same results. An additional setting to be checked for this to take effect is in Control Panel\Clock and Region, under Region click on change date, time, or number formats\ Additional Settings and under use "Use native digits" make sure you choose Context instead of Never. As this is a Windows setting it will affect all other software not just Studio of course.

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing a project editor with translation results. Columns display numbers 1, 2, 3, 300, and 450 with corresponding status bars indicating progress in green and orange.
