Asking again! 'Check that source and target end in same punctuation' verification feature has stopped working

Hello, 3 months ago I posted this question but did not get an answer. Recently I migrated to a new computer which I hoped would fix the problem but it is still there. To wit:

My QA checker 3.0 verification feature has stopped working reliably. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The function to check source and target punctuation pretty much never works, and I rely on that one so am feeling its absence. I have it set correctly in both Options and Project Settings, as you can see.

Screenshot of Trados Studio 2021 SR2 Options menu showing Punctuation settings with 'Check punctuation source and target end in the same punctuation' set to Error.

Screenshot of Trados Studio 2021 SR2 Project Settings for Childress Flyers showing Punctuation settings identical to the Options menu.

I'm using a fresh install of Trados Studio 2021 SR2 - 16.2.8.9097, fully updated, on a spanking new Windows 10 machine. I mostly translate simple Word files and it's been failing on every file. I'm a full-time translator so that's a lot of files. Big files, little files, files in a multi-file project, standalone files.... it doesn't matter. I translate Vietnamese using unicode fonts. I do get error reports when I run a verification check for things like a number missing, repeated word, tags in the wrong place, but the punctuation items generally do not get flagged.

I created a test sdlx file that shows the problem but can't figure out how to attach it to this post. Please advise. This has been bugging me for a while now and I would really like to figure out how to fix it.

  • I'm using Trados Studio 2021 SR2 - 16.2.8.9097.

But your response jogged something in my mind and I think (hope) it has solved the problem. I have noticed that occasionally the punctuation check will work properly on a random translation but couldn't figure out why. Just this morning I did a translation where it worked. It occurred to me that most of the translations I do are imported into an existing project (I maintain one project for each regular client and just add files in as the client sends them). And that these existing projects were all created before the QA Checker problem started happening. The translation I did this morning where the QA checker worked was a standalone file, not associated in any way with any previous projects. So I tried re-translating that test file both as a new standalone file and also as a new project file and both times the punctuation checker worked!

Now my working theory is that my previous templates/projects got corrupted somehow and all I need to do is create fresh project files for each client. That's easy, I was planning to do so at the beginning of the new year anyway to prevent the projects from growing too large.

Of course it does not explain why my presumably "corrupted" test file worked on your machine when it did not work on mine, but I will ignore that mystery as long as I get my punctuation checker back :).

  • When I opened your project in my Trados Studio 2021 SR2 16.2.9.9198, it was a Single File Project, and the punctuation checker didn't work either. Then I created a new Studio project from scratch and added your Test file.docx into that newly created project — the punctuation checker worked fine. So I agree with your theory. Need to re-create projects after the recent SR2 major update.

  • Thanks for that feedback Stepan. I actually feel better knowing that the problem I was having was replicated by you. And that the solution worked for you as well.
