Trados 2019 crashes in project with many repetitions/100%/CM

Hello,

I have been experiencing a really annoying problem with Trados lately, namely when I work on projects with larger number of repetitions/CMs/100% matches the studio crashes every few segments. It varies between projects, but at the moment I have a 3000+ word post editing project and I cannot work on it. Earlier today I had a project with almost no repetitions, and I experienced no crashes.

What can I do? I have a rather old PC with Windows 8.1 but for the last couple of years the studio worked perfectly.

Best,
Piotr

  • Hi

Please can you confirm the exact Studio version so we can be sure its as up to date as possible.
Does it ever give you an error?

What we need to help clarify is if the crash is because of Studio/Project, local PC or TM given your TM is doing degrees of processing.
Often it requires a few steps to be sure but in essence:

    1. What happens if you create projects and use TM's that are local to C drive / on desktop?
    2. How big are your TM's?
    3. What if you create a new TM local to your machine?

It maybe that it crashes because of where the project / TM is being accessed, like for example dropbox and there is a sync/access issue.
When it crashed again, please see if something stands out by looking at the Studio log which can be found here: C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio16\logs

  • Sorry for such a late reply. I indeed use google drive to store my TMs, which are also rather big, but Trados crashes even if I create a new tm dedicated to the project; when the TM's window shows "Searching" Trados will crash every now and then. With large projects having many repetitions/matches it gets really annoying.

But might that be my PC is just too slow to handle the TM search process?

  • The solution is quite simple: never use any cloud service for storing files connected to Studio. This will only cause trouble. Put your TMs and TBs on a SSD drive locally in your PC. Preferably it should be a M2 SSD drive, as only these are really fast. The working files may be put on a "typical" HDD (I keep them all on a NAS with no performance problems).

The solution for big TMs is using project TMs. These are very small and thus fast. When the project is ready you can simply update your main TM and forget about the project TM. Another advantage of project TMs is keeping potential errors and mistranslations away from the main TM.

  • Thanks for your answer. And what if the same happens when the TM is on my drive, and Trados crashes exactly as the TM performs "Searching"? This could be due to slow/old PC?

  • Could, but shouldn't be. Please try first to upgrade the TMs, if there is a orange triangle symbol on the TM symbol in your project settings. If that does not help, run a repair installation of your Studio.

  • Thanks again. I moved both the work files and the TM to my PC, upgraded the TM, performed Repair installation. All of this sadly didn't help.

But I might have found the culprit: Match Repair. When it's on, the Studio performs a search, that might last a second or two. It works for most of the time, but with larger projects with tons of 100% or other matches it might just cause the Studio to crash (perhaps due to my older PC lacking in performance).

When Match Repair is off, the match search performed by TM is always instantaneous. I don't remember if Match repair was added with an update of Studio 2019, but with larger files I've experienced more or less serious problems since it was introduced.

  • Match Repair has already been there in S2019.

Please check this setting and switch LookAhead off:

Trados Studio options menu with Translation Memory settings. The 'Enable LookAhead' option is checked.

This is an additional power-consumer in Studio, which is in my humble opinion completely unnecessary... This might help.

And if you think your PC might not be powerful enough, would you post the PC specs? At least the processor with the generation and the RAM.
