How to Import into TM

Hello,

Now I have a nice stock of several useful translated bilingual files (sdl package, or source/target files) to import into the TM.

I have started via "Align Documents for TM", created a new TM file and added one translated files of 50 TUs.

Screenshot of Trados Studio with the 'Align Documents' option highlighted under the 'Translation Memory' dropdown menu.

But next file with another 54 TUs, I choose the same TM (same theme, same client...) to import into it, then it was not possible anymore.

Information dialog box in Trados Studio showing a message: 051 alignment pairs imported into TM. Only duplicates or disconnected segments found.

Is there a limit of the TM ? It is not possible to cumulate several translated documents in a TM ?? Each time do I have to create the TM  ?? I hope not !!

I am so ashamed each time my Questions is so elementary matter.... sigh

If you can help me, it would be so much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

KM

  • Good questions.  Probably better to take a mixed approach with the files you mention.

I have started via "Align Documents for TM", created a new TM file and added one translated files of 50 TUs.

If you have translated files, SDLXLIFF for example, then you are better off importing these into your TM as the segments are already aligned.  Maybe you can clarify what you mean by "translated file" and then I can make sure I giving you the right response?

But next file with another 54 TUs, I choose the same TM (same theme, same client...) to import into it, then it was not possible anymore.

The message you are getting is telling you that only duplicates, or non-aligned segments were found.  In this case there is nothing to import and hence the message.  Perhaps provide a screenshot of the alignment editor immediately before you attempt to import?

Is there a limit of the TM ? It is not possible to cumulate several translated documents in a TM ?? Each time do I have to create the TM  ?? I hope not !!

No limit... although there is probably a practical limit in terms of performance for file-based TMs.  The limit depends somewhat on the type of TUs you have in there but it will be in the hundreds of thousands.

You also don't need a new TM each time you align.
