Is there any way to customize the red underline for term matches in the Editor to make it more visible? (Trados 2021)

Hi, relatively new user here. I searched as best I could but couldn't find any information on this in the help files or forum, so if it has been answered before, please point me in the right direction.

By default, term matches get a pale red "underline" over the text to indicate a match. But this line is so thin and pale that it's causing me eye strain.

Is there any way I can make this line thicker or make it a more vivid color? Or even to space it out so isn't nestled into the top of my text? (my source text is always Japanese, and a significant amount of the characters extend onto it, almost camouflaging the line.)

(Things I've tried: Increasing the source text font size with Font Adaptation doesn't increase the thickness of the line, so unfortunately it doesn't really help. I also tried fiddling with all the color options I could find like changing the background of the row to a contrasting color, but that didn't really help either. The line is just so thin and pale it doesn't stand out enough against anything I tried, even stark white.)

Thank you in advance for your help!

  • Hi

You can't change to lines indicating term recognition (red, above text) or recognition of placeables (blue, below text):

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing term recognition with a pale red line above the text '66 cm' and a blue line below it.

There might be a way using some custom programming, but unless you want to do that the answer is no, that's not possible.

There is a reason why the lines are a bit pale. When you enable recognotion of overlapping terms, areas of overlap are indicated with a darker red:

Close-up of Trados Studio interface highlighting term recognition with a darker red line above the text '66 cm' indicating overlapping terms.

So if you have the terms "boat" as well as "sail boat", and your source text is "This is a sail boat", the normal setting would not show "boat", neither in the text nor in the Term Recognition window. But if you have "overlapping terms" on, you will see "sail boat" and "boat" in your term recognition window, and "sail " will be with a pale red line (like "66 cm" in the screenshot above) and "boat" will be darker red with these little feet coming down from the line to indicate where the overlap ends.

It can help to turn text formatting off in the editor using Options-> Editor:

Trados Studio options menu with 'Formatting display style' dropdown selected, showing 'Show all tags but do not show formatting' option.

    Hope it helps,

    Daniel
