Strange word count issue in Trados 2021

Hi guys,

So I am having this strange issue with Trados 2021. It's midnight here and I'm tired of Googling and testing in Trados to no avail lol

I have a project from English into Japanese and French. The source file was translated before, so I have a TM for each language with the same translated content.

Now, today the client sent an updated version of said document and when analyzing it in Trados Studio I get more new words in the French than in the Japanese. How this could be? The document was translated into both languages before so the number of new words should be the same for both.

What could be happening here? I checked the segmentation rules in both TMs and its the same. Is the Japanese counted differently?

Screenshot of Trados Studio analysis results for Japanese language showing 244 total words with 7 new words.

  • I think you are the only one who can answer this.  The total word count is the same in both language pairs, the only difference relates to the analysis of the document compared to what's in your TM.  Perhaps one of the translators manually changed the segmentation by merging or splitting a sentence?  Perhaps some variable in the TM didn't have an equivalent in one of the languages?

If you really want to get to the bottom of it you could do this quite easily, as there are only 244 segments, by opening each file and comparing the TM match and observing what's in the TM when you find differences.  It may bring you some peace of mind.
