How do we know which bits are for translation and which are not?  Is there something in the file that makes this clear?

If you download the file, you will see that the last paragraph is yellow highlighted. That is how word office shows nonrestricted text in a restricted file.

In this instance I think the solution to "automatiKelly" (I like that Kelly ;-)) handle this is probably your best bet, especially if you have many files like this and many areas of protected text like this.

I could not find a way to easily identify these areas in MS Word using user features and maybe change some to hidden text for example, or apply a specific style we could exclude.  So other than development (as Kelly offers) I don't think there is a simple way to handle this.

Daniel Brockmann might have a suggestion as he's pretty good with the intricacies of MS Word.

One solution that I found was to add manually in the word file before and after each section of non-restricted paragraphs a key-word (something like [START] and [END]). And afterwards, blocking in Trados the segments before and after the key word (similar to the permStart and permEnd tag solution offered by Kelly).

However, I am thinking that if I have a file in which non-restricted and restricted paragraphs alternate, it would be really difficult to add them manually.

I am also thinking of a solution in which I extract de document.xml file from the word zip (after converting it to .docx) and use regex to import only the text within certain attributes (not too familier with the terminology regarding xml structure)

I did manage to do that by using memoQ's function of cascading filter, and at this stage I could export the xliff and import it into Trados, but I am also curious to see/know if this could be done that directly in Trados, without passing the document through an intermediat Cat Tool.

May I have your thoughts on this Paul and Daniel? Do you think it would be possible? I am aware that there is a lot of pre-processing, and one mistake could damage the files, but I am still curious.

Handling it using the underlying xml is of course possible in Trados Studio.  Regex wouldn't necessary for this as normal parser rules would do the trick.  However, this is also a lot of work, especially if you have multiple files.  For large files the xml would also be considerable in size and performance might be an issue.

I think the best solution so far is the plugin that Kelly developed.  This is quite simple and easy to use.
