Long Story:
We translated a 28 pg Word Document in English into Japanese using Trados 2019. We finalized and sent the client a a Japanese word file. After receiving it, our client sent back the Japanese word document with many edits.
Now, rather than inputing line by line the edited strings, our translator said there is a way to merge the two word documents and create a new xliff or tm. Is this possible? How can this be done?
Potentially this could be done by using "Retrofit":
But practically this really depends on how much "editing" the customer has done. Sometimes the smarter solution here to keep the documents in synch if the target has been revised too much is to make sure you are happy with the edits yourself, accept any track changes if this has been used and then simply create a new project using the Japanese file as the source and your exiting TM through AnyTM which allows you to populate unchanged segments from the TM and add any updated or new translations as you go.
You could also align the edited Japanese with the original English to create your TM but if the Japanese version has substantially changed so you now have additional sentences or paragraphs (or deleted) then even alignment would not only be a challenge but also won't make it as easy to align because you'll have missing English text (or too many) to align to. So creating a new project might just be easier in the end.

"Update from Reviewed Target File (Retrofit)" should be the best solution.
But, currently, it is not.
It has so elementary limitations - it is blind to "added/deleted sentence/paragraph".
Now, "Any TM" (source/target inverse) method, it is a bad choice.
Because, "BulahBulah.anytmreverse.sdltm" which is generated automatically, is not so much reliable to use.
So, it could be quite labor intensive in the end.
The last resort is "Align Documents".
In general it is good.
But, currently, it is not usable at all, in case you have segment counts 2,000 and over.
So, My choice ?

"Align Documents written in MS Excel" like this...
It executes exactly the same functionality with "Align Documents" but works well with segments counts way over 2,000 of course.
Hope RWS improve "Update from Reviewed Target File (Retrofit)" a little bit more.

in some cases, Trados refues to make a proper project from MS Word file.
That is because, some crazy customers use MS Word with ultra, super and insane ways.. they apply full of locks/prohibits/forms/fields etc etc..
So it prevents you from make "Inverted(target>source) project" at all.
