Is it possible to add tags in the target that are not in the source? I want to apply bold formatting to a couple of words in a segment. I have Trados Studio 2021 Professional.

It depends on the source file as not all filetypes will support "introduced" markup. What is the source file?

It's an XML file. It's a Web article but when I click on View page source, I get a page showing HTML.
I should add that the formatting icons in the Home tab were greyed out
it looks like not a CAT (Computer Aided Translation)
but rather a CAP (Computer Aided Programming) things.
It's an XML file.
In this case you need to create the Quick Inserts yourself in the filetype settings making sure that you use the code that will be supported by this file when it gets back into the application it's being used in. If you don't do this correctly and just introduce something you think is right then you risk breaking the file for your client by using tags it doesn't recognise.
You have to be careful with XML and understand well the things you are doing.
