I suggest that instead of modifying the default XML filetype you create a new filetype based on XML, like this:


Give this filetype a meaningful name and make the changes to the settings. Once you have done this, export the settings and send the settings file to your colleague. When he imports this file, he will see the additional filetype in his list of filetypes and this should then work fine (importing default filetypes may not work reliably).

Please also make sure you change the 'file type identifier' so that you can see which filetype has been used when looking at the orange start tag of the file in the Editor.

Hi Walter,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I just tried creating a new filetype based on XML, but it did not work on my collegue's computer. We also tried with a txt file. I think I will ask her to reinstall Trados to see if we can fix this.

What exactly do you mean by 'it didn't work'? What happened? Did he/she get an error message or what happened?

The rules are not applied. Check the image, this is the new filetype.

The reinstallation didn't solve the problem. I noticed mix UI languages (EN and ES). Could this be the cause of the problem?

I can create new filetypes, but I cannot modify the default filetypes.

Studio does not allow you to modify the default XML filetypes. The workaround consists in creating copies of the default and renaming them. 

As I can see, you were able to create a new filetype (e.g. 'Practice 4 XM' but you mention that the rules are not applied. Which default filetype did you take as starting point?
I ask because in your screenshot I don't see the two options highlighted in yellow:


As I can see, most of your tags are HTML tags, so I suggest you simply activate the embedded HTML option in the XML 2 filetype. This will save you defining all the different tag pairs.

Also, for good measure, check that you don't have inactive filetypes by going to the top level of filetypes and checking if there is a blue link telling you that you have new filetypes available. Should this be the case, click on the link to install the new filetypes.
