Trados Studio crashes without error message when opening a project on OneDrive

Question

Trados Studio just crashes without any error message when trying to open a project (not all projects, so far it seems random, most of the time Word files) that is stored on OneDrive. When the project is saved on the computer locally, the project opens without any problems. Pausing or stopping OneDrive did not change the situation. Does anyone else experience this? Any ideas on what to do, so that Studio opens the projects properly, without crashing?

Hi Thomas Faust What version of Studio are you running? You maybe able to get a clue by looking through the log files: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio17\logs which is for Trados Studio 2022. That said many people do manage to work with OneDrive alongside Studio despite we say its untested and not supported.  That said what exactly are you opening via OneDrive, source files or actual Projects? If its actual projects your databases maybe the cause.  Yes... don't use OneDrive folders for your projects! More seriously OneDrive is a cloud-based file storage service provided by Microsoft that allows users to store and sync files across different devices. However, using OneDrive for software that updates files regularly can sometimes be problematic due to several reasons:

Synchronization issues: OneDrive uses a synchronization mechanism to keep files up to date across all devices. However, this mechanism can sometimes fail to work properly, leading to synchronization issues where different versions of the same file exist on different devices.

File conflicts: When multiple users or devices are accessing the same file on OneDrive, conflicts can occur when two users try to update the same file simultaneously. OneDrive may not be able to resolve these conflicts automatically, leading to data loss or corruption.

Performance issues: OneDrive may slow down when syncing large files or folders, causing the software to take longer to update files. 
 
 Internet connectivity: OneDrive requires an internet connection to access and sync files, which may not be available in all situations. This can be a problem if you need to access files offline or in areas with poor internet connectivity. 
 
 If you are having problems I suggest you test Studio outside of your OneDrive folders and if the problem goes away then you need to take a good hard look at OneDrive as this may be causing problems that a solution like Trados Studio is not designed to try and overcome. Trados Studio has its own cloud solution if you really need the benefits of sharing, although not for 2017 as this is too old.
