‘Prepare’ batch task doesn’t create project TMs nor pre-translated SDLXLIFFs

Trados Studio project settings window showing pre-translate files settings with no visible errors.

Created two new projects yesterday, each containing one short pdf document, using the batch task ‘prepare’, using Language Weaver as MT provider.

In both instances, there was no error message upon the completion of the task.

However, no project translation memory had been created for either project - instead a generic empty TM was created in C:\Users\***\OneDrive\Documents\Studio 2022\Temporary Resources for the first project, and accessed when the second project was created, and only in the case of the first file, a pre-translated sdlxliff was created, as expected 100% populated with NMT - no pre-translated sdlxliff was created for the second file.

Spent several hours today running the ‘pre-translate’ batch task manually, and, eventually, recreating the project altogether – with a new name, and after having deleted all files from the first run - to no avail.

Consulted all relevant documentation, help pages, the ‘using MT’ and Paul Filkin’s blog post and video ‘Character Counts’, in order to discover which ever so small twitch in the settings, general and project, might cause the problem, but am quite sure, now, that I got the settings right all along.

At some point, I uninstalled the DataProtectionSuite plugin, installed yesterday, thus a potential culprit, at some point run a repair-install of Studio, and at some point logged-out and back in to my Studio account, as I had read that a similar problem had been caused by having stayed logged-in for a long time – unfortunately, none of these helped.

Lastly, I created a brand-new project on my laptop, just in case there might be an issue with my desktop – different name, different file to be translated, DataProtectionSuite uninstalled and rebooted, and logged-out and back in to my Studio account – and found myself but with a third project not pre-translated and without project translation memory

To boot, all of my today’s attempts to resolve the issue have been registered by the Language Weaver server and hence reduced my allowance – without making translation results available once.

At this point, I am truly exhausted and quite desperate.

Please do come back to me urgently.

Thank you very much in advance.

Have yo got a main translation memory in your project when you create it?  This is needed to create the project TM from it.  So if you are only working with machine translation and not TM at all then you won't get a project TM created.  I just tested and see this when I do it:

Trados Studio screenshot showing a project translation memory (TM) named 'en-fr (Main TM).sdltm' with English and French flags indicating language pair, and a 'repare Task-en-fr (Main TM).sdltm' below it.

You can see I have a project TM created under my main TM. If I don't use a main TM when I create my project then the same exercise gives me this:

Trados Studio screenshot displaying only the 'Language Weaver provider' with 'na' under Languages column, indicating no main TM is used and no project TM is created.

  • Thank you, Paul.

...read and viewed so much of your advice learning Trados over the past few weeks...

Just run another test, and can confirm with some relief that you were 100% right about the project TM:  with a 'main' project TM attached,  a project TM was duly created.

Trados Studio project settings showing a main project TM attached with no errors.

Not so the critical pre-translated sdlxliff:

Editor view of an sdlxliff file in Trados Studio with all segments left unchanged and empty.

Just like all day yesterday, no error messages, and, evidently, task executed but for some reason not 'delivered'.

Compared the settings reported in the xml file with those of that very first 'prepare' task of mine which did produce the expected pre-translated sdlxliff. They are exactly the same:

XML file comparison showing identical settings for two different translation tasks in Trados Studio.

Also just tried two further things which hadn't occurred to me yesterday: (a) changed the pre-translate settings from “overwrite existing translation if better match is found” to “always overwrite existing translation” – there not being any, the task might abort when trying to compare (b) added another 'main' TM containing 70 TUs (the one I had added for testing your solution for the project TM problem was actually empty), giving the task something with which to compare the MT. Exact same result as before: task run, but all segments left 'unchanged' - and indeed empty opening the sdlxliff in the editor.

The remainder of the pre-tranlate settings were configured as follows (screenshots taken right now):

Batch processing settings in Trados Studio with 'always overwrite existing translation' selected.

I most certainly wouldn’t know what else to try, except for re-installing, all fingers crossed.

The only other piece of information I can provide, although it is well beyond my abilities to second guess whether it might be relevant, is that I was unable to connect to Studio cloud resources for nearly three weeks. Apparently, that had to do with a very old e-mail address to which the cloud resources had remained mapped (Case No. 00730467). Seems rather improbable that the mainframe, due to some remaining issue with my credentials, does provide the MT during the task, but doesn’t ‘deliver’ it. But then, except for the plugin I had installed, nothing had changed between the day before yesterday and yesterday.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

It’s much appreciated to say the least.

    Best regards,

    Claudia
