"Dependency file not found" error message on trying to create a target language file after importing a bilingual word review file

This is a relatively new problem in my Studio 2021 installation. After importing a bilingual word review file Studio can all of a sudden no longer create target language files, although before importing such review file that does not seem to be a problem (I tested this on various projects). So it seems that the update process after a review in word as such corrupts the dependency/source file for some reason within the package. That means that I have to re-start projects from scratch with the TM from the previous rund, which can be very tiresome on big projects. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • I am working on my local drive. And I have tried browsing for the actual file, but on finding it and trying to add it back in within the project, as suggested by some, the error still persists. It is as if the bilingual review process persistently "spoils" that file within the package. I had to start new with the TM from the first run as the client insists on a target language file. But the actual match values are gone and they won't be pleased about that as they now cannot filter for new translations, as everything looks like a 100% match. I have no idea, why this problem should crop up now. BTW, I am running the latest version of Studio, so the software is up to date after my latest update last week.

Go to your Project settings, open File types, go to SDLXLIFF, click General and increase the size of the embedded file. Most probably your source file is bigger than 20 MB and this will not be stored within the sdlxliff.

  • Thanks Jerzy. I checked the size of the source file and it is way smaller than that. Also, that size had already been increased beyond 20 MB in the past. So I don't think that is the problem.

  • Interestingly, I have just heard from one of the LSP I am working for that several of their freelancers have been experiencing this issue of late in Studio, when I had to explain to them this morning why all segments are now perfect matches. So I gather it is a bug/corruption on the side of SDL rather than to do with my installation. Anything else would be an extreme coincidence.

There is NO such bug. There must be other reasons for this problem. Check your PC configuration, if there are no programs emptying the Windows TMP folder on automated way. Other possibility could be user rights, if Studio hasn't been installed as admin.

However, typically the problem is caused by a software emptying the TMP folder when Studio works or by a crash of Studio.

  • Thanks. I will look into it further a bit later. Obviously it could be argued that storing such important files in the TMP Folder of Windows for any programme to work properly is not the best to begin with anyway.

Obviously it could be argued that storing such important files in the TMP Folder of Windows for any programme to work properly is not the best to begin with anyway.

Files are not stored in the temp folder permanently.  We use this folder for the same reasons any application uses it. :

    1. Temporary Storage: The temp folder is a designated location for storing temporary files. These files are created and used by programs for a variety of purposes, such as caching data or holding intermediate results during processing.

    2. Easy Access: The temp folder is typically located in an easily accessible location on the computer, making it a convenient place for software applications to store files that need to be accessed frequently or quickly.

    3. Automatic Cleanup: Windows is designed to automatically clean up the contents of the temp folder periodically, ensuring that files that are no longer needed are deleted. This can help prevent the accumulation of unnecessary files on the computer, which can slow down performance over time.

    4. Security: The temp folder is typically located within the user's profile directory, which means that applications can write to it without requiring administrator privileges. This helps to prevent security issues that might arise if programs were allowed to write to other parts of the file system.

Overall, the temp folder provides a convenient and safe location for software applications to store temporary files that are needed during normal operation.

This is also why I asked you about OneDrive or some other network facility.  Software such as OneDrive could use the temp folder while synchronizing files. When files are synchronized, OneDrive may need to temporarily download or cache files in the temp folder before uploading them to the cloud or downloading them from the cloud.  If you have network connectivity issues, synchronization errors, or conflicts between different versions of files then the problem you have described could come about.

Often I have asked users this question and the answer has been similar, "no, I only work on my local drive".  Now I'm sure you are doing just this, but sometimes users don't realise that they might be working locally but they are still working on a location that is being synchronised with OneDrive.  This is a very common problem these days as almost every computer you buy uses this sort of mechanism by default.
