Recurring thousand separator issue: space wanted rather than comma or full stop

I've been struggling with this issue for years, suspect it gets reset to default each time I upgrade (currently Studio 2021).

I receive documents that are loaded with tables of figures which use a soft space as a thousand separator - and I want to retain this space in the target language. Instead Trados insists on changing the space to a comma.

So I put in 123 234, and I get back 123,234, though what I want is 123 234.

I don't see an option for making another choice.

The above is taken from project settings, but I want to make the rule the default for all my memories - but with the possibility of changing it at project level.

I'm afraid I'm not one of the most IT-savvy users so please, a fairly basic explanation!

I see I posted this as 'discussion' 5 days ago - and got no replies. Trying again with 'question.

  • I may be missing something here, but have you checked the "Number Formats" in your TM?  That's where I would start, anyway.  You can reach them by opening the file, then clicking on Project Settings, then selecting your TM in "Translation Memory and Automated Translation", then clicking on the Settings button:

Trados Studio Project Settings window showing the 'Settings' button highlighted in the 'Translation Memory and Automated Translation' section.

Then, select Language Resources, and click on the "Default" under the Target Language:

Translation Memory Settings window for 'En-Ar numbers' with 'Language Resources' selected and 'Numbers' tab highlighted in default settings.

There, you can set the required thousand and decimal separator:

Number Formats dialog box with options to set thousand and decimal separators, showing examples '1,000,000.57' and '1.000.000,57'.

You might need to check the source language setting as well, to make sure it recognises what you're starting with, of course.

If you set those values in your TM when you create it, rather than in Project Settings, then it will remember them each time you use it - even when you upgrade Studio in future.

Hope that answers your question - if not, could you elaborate a bit, please?
