Dictating software & Studio 2015

Hello,

I found out another problem with Autosuggest in Studio 2015. I can not use my dicating sofware. After the dictating starts to write the text into the Studio Editor window, autosuggest starts look up and after a known word is found, it shows the results and stops to write down the text I have dictated. That is very, very annoying.

Does anybody have an idea how to solve this bug? Thank you!!!

After 3 days using Studio 2015 I really have to say, I´m really absolutely disappointed !!!

  • Hi Adrian,

It would be a good idea to turn off Autosuggest via File>Options while you're using your dictation software.

    Autocorrect also...

I would have thought that these two tools, though incredibly useful when typing, would interrupt your train of thought as you are dictating - as if another person was constantly interrupting.

  • Hi Ali,
thank you for your kind response. You are right, it is a possible solution in fact.
BUT: With the previous versions everything worked absolutely OK. So this version is a step back with this "function". What I mostly translate are technical norms, manuals etc. And you can imagine, that some parts of the texts are easier to type than to dictate. And in those cases I would have to switch Autosuggest on and off 10 times a minute, because it is a very helpful tool in other cases :-D
I wish, there would be an easier way to switch it on and off at least. Unfortunately, the new customizing of ribbons is not perfect at all and you can´t ad all the commands you would wish to the fast access toolbar. One of the commands you can not customize is e.g. Autosuggest... :-(
    Best regards,
    Adrian
  • Hi Adrian,

Ah, I do see your point :)

I do wonder, though, if AutoSuggest would work better during dictation with AutoCorrect turned off?

This is something that should be flagged up for development, as dictation software does appear to be making a comeback.

    Have a good weekend,
    Ali
  • Problem solved with a short AutoHotKey script. So "F2" switches AutoSuggest on and off now.
    GOD BLESS AUTOHOTKEY!!!
But is this really a way how to develop software? To let the users to remove bugs by themselves? Because "AHK" was recommended to my by some SDL support guy one year ago...

Hardly a bug!  I think Ali is spot on and most people using dictation software won't use AutoSuggets at all.  However, if this is really something we need to address for more users then we just need to improve on the options for customisation so it can be switched on/off with a single click.

  • Hello Paul,
see my reply to Ali above.
    1. I did not have any problems with AutoSuggest + dictating SW in Studio 2014, it just worked. And AutoSuggest in Studio 2015 does not work the same way like before now.
    2. I usually combine dictating with typing. You can not generally say "AutoSuggest would interrupt you while dictating". Some parts of the same text are easier to dictate, other parts not. And for this case users could find usefull, if there would be a On/Off-Hotkey for Autosuggest.
I have a problem with AHK combinated with AutoSuggest too, it has the same "symptoms" like while dictating. I thing the way how Autosuggest "behaves" has been changed, but in a annoying way. My English is far too bad to describe it, but if I should use one word, I would say, AutoSuggest is somehow "pushing". Just try the AHK replace command e.g. fz::Fahrzeug if there is another word beginning with "f" in the same segment, you will see, what I mean. AutoSuggest simply pushes you to use its suggests, even if you would like to keep typing or dictating, but AutoSuggest "freezes" on the first letter and you have either to accept some of the suggested words with "enter" or reject everything with "Esc". But if you reject it, you lose the context of the AHK key sequence.
Btw., it is a pity that users can not customize all the commands in different menus in the quick access bar. It is a great improvement that we can customize some of the menus at least, but why not all?
