Hi, 
Solved problem (hopefully) by updating from 2009 to 2015 Studio. 
Spoke to contact at SDL who confirmed that it was a bug in 2009 that sometimes created these problems. In the past I've chopped documents into little bits to try and find the offending part. New version seems OK for time being but not actually saved any target files.

Hi Chris, 
 I'm not familiar with this error message (and it's always good to tell us what version of Studio you are using), but I'd try the following: 
 
 Open the DOC source file again as if you are just starting (use the single document approach) 
 Immediately try to save as target, and if you get the same error then you'll need to fix the problem in the source file before you can work with it 
 If it works then something went wrong during the translation and you should be able to pre-translate the source again from your TM and save it 
 
 Another possible solution if the DOC source file needs fixing is to save it as DOCX and try again with that.
