Trados Studio freezes without an error when adding a file for translation

Trados Studio dialog box showing a stalled process with the message 'Adding files... Convert to Translatable Format+Copy to Target Languages+Apply PerfectMatch+Pre-translate Files+Analyze Files' and a green progress bar that is not moving.

When I try to add a new docx file to an existing project, I get stuck at this stage. The adding never finishes and there's no error message after several minutes. Is there anything I can do here?

  • Hi ,

I’ve got the same issue a couple of times in the past with older Trados Studio versions.

Sometimes it’s a matter of closing Studio and restart it. If the issue is gone, please forget the rest of the post.

If the Studio restart doesn’t help, I'd try splitting the task to find the culprit. I’d start doing the 1st step (right click > Batch Tasks > Convert to Translatable Format):

Trados Studio menu with 'Convert to Translatable Format' task highlighted and a red error icon indicating an issue.

If it doesn’t work, I knew there's something in the Source file that needed to be checked. If it worked, then I’d run the 2nd task (Copy to Target Languages):

Trados Studio 'Batch Tasks' dropdown menu with 'Copy to Target Languages' option selected.

Then I’d run the remaining tasks, one by one: Apply PerfectMatch, Pre-translate Files, and Analyze Files. At the end of the day, you knew the task causing the issue or I could get it working.

    I hope it helps!

  • Unfortunately, restarting definitely doesn't work, especially that I need to close the Studio with the task manager every time this happens.

When I do as you suggested and only Covert to Translatable Format, I can see that the file is added but when I try to open it, I get the following error:

The first line in English would be: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

  • ,

ok, please try the fixes suggested in this post:

RE: Error message when I open a file in Editor: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Please come back if any of these solutions fixes your issue or come back with the version and build number of your Trados Studio. My bet is if you fix this first step, remaining steps will run smoothly.

Also, I’m wondering if you can add any other files to the same project (is a local project?) or what would happened if you create a new project and add the file there.

  • I'll try the solutions in the thread you linked.

Yes, it's a local projet and I can add other files without any problems. Creating a new project and adding the file there causes exactly the same issues unless I don't add the TM I normally use for that language pair. Creating a new project without any TM and then adding the TM later seems to be working and I'm using this as the workaround to work on the project. However, I'm afraid this might cause issues in the future. Also, the TM doesn't seem to give me any problems for other files.

  • I have now tried a complete reinstall of the Studio (as suggested in the thread you mentioned) but the result seems to be the same. After the reinstall, I created a new project, added the file to it, selected the usual TM and got stuck here:Trados Studio screenshot showing project preparation steps. 'Apply PerfectMatch', 'Pre-translate Files', and 'Analyze Files' are in progress at 77% with no errors or warnings.
