How to import the amended version of a target file back into a Studio project?

Dear RWS Community members,

I am facing some technical issue with Studio 2021 SR2 - 16.2.10.9305, and I hope that you will be able to help me fix it.

Here is the context: some months ago, I translated a Word file for a customer. The source was about 10,000 words. Now, the customer is asking me to translate/implement changes made in the source into the target – so far, so good.

There is a snag, though: the customer modified many sentences in the Word target file that I delivered, and so, as a result, I cannot implement the changes directly into the project that I created some months ago, since the target version of the text is 'out-of-date'. Since this text is long, it would take many extra hours to update the target version with these modifications! My question is the following: is it possible to automatically import the target (Word) file that my customer edited back into my Studio project with a few clicks?

I think functions like Retrofit can automate this process, and I watched tutorials and read threads to try and understand how to proceed, but I did not figure out how to do it properly so far :/

Do you have any insights?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best wishes,

Nicolas M

  • Hello Nicolas,

I understand your situation and I'm here to help. Yes, you can import the amended target file back into your Trados Studio project using the Retrofit feature. Here's how you can do it:

Step 1: Open your Trados Studio project.

Step 2: Navigate to the 'Files' view.

Step 3: Right-click on the file you want to update and select 'Update from External Review'.

Step 4: In the dialog box that appears, browse to the location of your amended target Word file and select it.

Step 5: Click 'Open'. Trados Studio will then import the changes from the amended target file into your project.

Please note that this process works best if the target file does not contain any tracked changes or comments. Also, ensure that there are no empty target segments in the original target file, as this could result in misalignment after the retrofit. If there are any empty target segments, copy the source text into them before performing the retrofit. Locked segments will also be updated.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

    Best regards,
