Is it possible to insert matches from the TM without changing the segment status?

Is there any possibility to insert matches from a translation memory without overwriting the status of the segment (such as new, fuzzy etc.)? Normally, by inserting a match from a TM, the status will be changed to a 100 % match, however, I would like to keep the original status (such as for example memoQ does when inserting matches in a pretranslated file).

The background is that I have to repair a damaged file by inserting the matches from the TM which still works, but without having a translation that only consists of 100 % matches.

  • Hello,

Yes, it is possible to insert matches from the Translation Memory (TM) without changing the segment status in Trados Studio. You can achieve this by using the "Keep initial segment origin and status" option in the Perfect Match feature. Here's how you can do it:

Step 1: Open your project in Trados Studio.

Step 2: Navigate to the "Project Settings" and select the "Perfect Match" option.

Step 3: In the Perfect Match settings, enable the "Keep initial segment origin and status" option. This will ensure that the original status of the segments (new, fuzzy, etc.) is maintained even after inserting matches from the TM.

Step 4: Run the Perfect Match on your file. The matches from the TM will be inserted into your file, but the segment status will remain as it was originally.

Please note that this feature works best when there are no tracked changes in the segments. If there are tracked changes, Perfect Match may not be able to merge the affected segments due to the changes.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

    Best regards,

  • The Trados AI answer sounds great, but I cannot find the described options.

  •  When you confirm a segment default setting in Studio is to then update TM.
This behaviour of a confirmed segment AND updating TM can be changed whereby you can confirm a segment and NOT allow it to update TM

Trados Studio options menu with 'Update translation memory' checkbox checked under 'After Confirming Segments Manually' section.

But I understand is you want to leave segments as they are, example: draft mode, or perhaps (unconfirmed / locked) and update your TM.
Leaving your SDLXLIFF File and segment status as they are (not confirmed) you can update the TM as part of a batch task.at any stage

Do pay attention that controls which segments  (based on status) goes into the TM

Trados Studio settings window showing 'Translation Memory Updates' with options for segment status and updating translation memories.

    I trust this helps
