PDF file to become an InDesign file

Hello all,

I would like to ask for advice regarding translating a PDF-sdlxliff file I received from a client who wants to create an InDesign file out of that.

How should I proceed in the best way so that the formatting is preserved, please? Just translate the file and expect that the client can open it in InDesign? Or should I rather convert it to another format (IDML)?

However, I read a lot of negative experience trying to open the IDML format of the translation in InDesign (where the translation should be imported and opened).

Thank you for any help!

  • Dear all,

I opened all the necessary IDML files in Trados, but while uploading them, Trados changed the order of the files (I had the numerical order right when browsing my PC during the Trados project creation). So now, it looks like this:

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing a list of IDML files with non-sequential numbering, such as '1. Cover', '10. P - Fassadenschutz', followed by '11. R - Dachabdichtungen', indicating a change in the order of files.

My question is: will the files be ordered correctly upon finalisation of the project (its import into Adobe InDesign), please?

I really should not mess up this translation for a new client, you know...

Thank you very much for any help!

The sort order in Windows Explorer may be different than the one used by Trados Studio. As Trados Studio won’t change the file names, the translated files will have the same order.

In order to avoid this if you manually renamed them in Windows Explorer, you can padd zeros as needed.

For example, 1. Cover would become 01. Cover. In this way, Trados will show the files in the same order as Windows Explorer.

  • Ok, thank you, Jesús! Good to know! Since you write that the order will be maintained when importing into InDesign, I will not rename them in this case.
