Opening/Saving packages/Trados 2015

Hello, when I want to save a package in another folder than the default folder, I have to create the folder first and then select it.  With Trados 2011, I didn´t need to create each time a new folder (very time-consuming!), it saved the package automatically in the requested path, with the corresponding package number. I just had to select the path once, then, all the new projects were automatically saved in this path, with a new folder for every new package.
Is this not possible anymore with Trados 2015?
Many thanks in advance for your help!

  • Hi Anne,

I had to play with this a bit to understand what you meant as I didn't think it behaved any differently at first. But I see a couple of things now:

    2011
You open the package, change the location and at this point lose the name of the project. So you have to copy paste, or retype the project name into the path presented and the folder is created with the project in it.

    2015
You open the package, change the location and at this point lose the name of the project. But now you can't add the name into the end of the path, you have to click browse and then add the name of the project so that the new empty folder is created with this name.

So there is an additional step here. But next you come to do the second package and in 2011 the path is remembered and in 2015 it is not. So I would have to browse to the new location every time. Indeed this is a little irritating and is what you are referring to I think.

This latter problem is interesting because when 2015 first came out I tested this and I'm pretty sure the location you used for the Project was retained so it became available the next time, which is what you want. But now it seems to revert to the default Project location every time. There is good reason for this I think and I documented this in an article which you may find interesting (I also noted the behaviour you want which I'm sure applied at the time):

I'll pick this up with the development team and see whether there were some changes here I missed after the last update.

  • Hi Paul,
Many thanks for your prompt reply! I know that my question was not very clear, so I have to add the following:

    - In 2011, I selected a new path, but didn´t have to copy paste the name of the package, this was inserted AUTOMATICALLY. And by the next package, as you quoted, Trados remembered this path and added automatically the name of the new package, all I had to do was to click “open package”, and that was it.

    - In 2015, when I select a path, I can´t add the name of the new project, Trados says that the folder already contains files/that the folder doesn´t exist, I have to create an empty folder BEFORE I choose the path, which is really very very annoying. What you write: “you have to click browse and then add the name of the project so that the new empty folder is created with this name” doesn´t work for me.

And as you say, by opening the next package, 2015 proposes again the default path.

So, many thanks for looking for a solution so that 2015 remembers the new path everytime, but can you also tell me how to browse and add a new project name so that a new folder is created?

I hope I´m not confusing you too much and thank you very much in advance for your help!!
    Best regards,
    Anne
  • Hi Anne,

I decided to create a short video to make sure we are clear on what's happening and because I can share this with development to help explain where things could be improved and why.

Thank you for taking the time to report this.

    Regards

  • Thank you so much, this has answered all my questions!!!

  • Hi Paul

My suggestion would be to reincorporate these two changes in the next release:
    (1) Allow editing of the path field
    (2) Remember the last path

Ideally, the system could remember the last path used and substitute the lowest level with the name of the project and suggest this as the path.

P.S.: Let me point out that your video is in a file format that is not supported in Chrome. This makes it necessary to copy the URL and open it in another browser in order to be able to watch the video.
  • Thanks Walter,

The next release should do the second one at least, but I'd rather see some options for setting a path for anything that needs one.

That's odd... I'm using Chrome and it seems fine for me.  It's a youtube video not a file loaded to the community.

  • Paul

This explains it. It was blocked by the "Restricted mode" of YouTube (which I guess is "On" by default because I can't remember having changed this setting, I didn't even know here it was buried before I looked at this issue now).

Another remark on using YouTube: I know that it is very convenient to post videos on YouTube, but are you aware that many companies block the access to YouTube from within the company? This means that a lot of corporate users of Studio cannot access all the tutorials available on Youtube. I often faced the situation where I sent links to users for tutorial videos and received the answer "Sorry, I cannot watch this video from my company PC, I'll have to do it when I am at home from my private PC". This also to many of the tutorial links of the "Welcome" view in Studio.

    Hi Walter,

I must admit I have never come across this before so I think it must be a few rather than more!  I think this is unfortunate for those companies, but don't think we should be duplicating everything we make available on youtube to satisfy the needs of a few.  It's by far the most effective way to share video content to a wider audience.

I guess when we do work for organisations like this then services could be provided to make them available in other formats.

  • Maybe it is mainly a problem of the "more security minded " Swiss[:D]

I have the same problem with Dropbox for example, I can't use it to make files available for download because most companies (at least in Switzerland) do block Dropbox (and other cloud services too).
