Yes, it's because you are using the default XML filetype that has no clue how you want that tag to be handled.  You should create a custom XML filetype for this file and set that tag to be inline.  That way it won't get segmented like that.

Hi Paul thank you for getting back to me. I have tried creating a custom filetype and setting this tag to be inline using the xpath rule '//ref3D' but it doesn't work. I'm trying to work out why it works for some files and not others even with the standard xml file type.
