CM segments in empty TM

Hi, everybody! I'm reaching out because I don't know what's going on with my Trados 2022. Every time I translate a segment *manually* and confirm it, I see it as "CM" (though the TM is empty cause I'm translating everything from scratch). Any ideas why this happens?

Thanks a lot! Slight smile

  • Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, Jerzy!!! Slight smile

Excuse my ignorance (I usually work with big TMs), but shouldn't the segment be marked as 100% or something like that? Because it's not actually a context match in this case (since the TM is empty, and I'm starting to translate the document).

As soon you start storing segments in TM, it is NOT empty anymore. And even if this TM would contain just ONE segment, which would happen to be the very first one in a document, you could close Studio entirely without storing anything and restart it, the reopen this very same document with this very same TM and you would have a context match there. During your translation the segments are stored in the TM including the information necessary for Context Match, which is:

    • the current segment is the same as in the TM
    • the document structure level of the current segment is the same (i.e. list item, heading, table cell...)
    • the previous segment is the same as it was in the document, where the next segment has been translated for the first time
    • the preceding segment is translated exactly the same as it was in the document, where the next segment has been translated for the first time
    • the document structure level of the preceeding segment is the same as it was in the document, where the next segment has been translated for the first time

Under this conditions you get a CM. And because you simply go back in your document, previous no matches are now context matches. If you change the order of the sentences in your document and open this modified one, you should get 100% matches, but rather no CM matches.

  • I see... So this is perfectly normal, then.

Well, many thanks for your thorough explanation and your patience in answering my rather silly question.

Have a wonderful day, Jerzy! Blush

TBH there are no silly questions. You can use the  Community Hub to propose topics which should be explained. And maybe a good explanation on all the kinds of matches would be nice.
