Translation Memory not updated - Other target segment in TM

I created a project and created a project TM (I am also using other TMs for this translation). After translating and confirming the segements I have reopened segments to make corrections, which I then confirmed. However, these corrections do not show up in the project TM, it still shows the previous translation.

Apparently, the project TM has not been updated. A message comes up "other target segment in Translation Memory (Anderes Zielsegment in Translation Memory)" and unter "Information" I receive the message: "The translation in the document differs from the  translation in the translation memory Select "add to document" to update the document or "add as a new translation" to update the TM.

However, I do not know where to "add the segment as a new translation" - where do I find the command?

Also - do I have to repeat the command for each segment that I corrected - or can the TM be udpated as a whole? - When I created the project TM I ticked the box "update" and expected that this would happen automatically.

Thank you very much for any advice you can give.

I am using Trados Studio 2022

Kind regards, Ellen

To make sure a TM is updated, the "Update" checkbox MUST be selected. If you have more than one TM in project, select just one TM.

Here is an example of settings from a project with three main TMs and the corresponding project TMs:

Screenshot of Trados Studio project settings showing three Translation Memories (TMs) with the 'Update' checkbox selected for the first TM.

When you have finished your translation, simply run a batch task "Update main TMs". When doing so, you can decide, how the TM shall be updated. In your case the "Overwrite existing units" is the best choice. This way all changes will never be lost.

    Hi Jerzy,

Thanks a lot. I do select the "Update" checkbox all the time, of course. But, it didn't update anyway.

Why should only one be selected? It didn't bother before.

And why do I need to run a batch task "Update main TMs"? Shouldn't it be done automatically? I never had to do that... (Doing that works, but it's more work ;-))

If you select more than one TM for update, you will get a "Duplicate match" penalty, so instead of a 100% you will have 2 of 99% each.

There are several methods of working with Trados Studio. You can work with single file projects and only have the segments in TM which were confirmed during the translation process. However, you can also simply run the batch afterwards to make sure really all changes have been adapted there. Not bothering about such possibilities and other possible ways of working with TS is not the best solution, as you may miss much better ways of doing your job, if you bother. This is like driving cars: you can be an amateur driver or become a professional. We need to be professionals in TS, as this is our working tool, the main tool for many of us.

  • It's not only the driver, it's also the car... If I need to add oil or water after each drive, it doesn't mean I'm a better driver... It means my car has a problem... ;-)

I don't think that I use single file projects. I use a few different Local Projects with a few files, and then I use several TMs, because I used to have a TM for each job. Now I use one for Marketing, one for Real Estate, for example.

I don't really know what the Duplicate march does... It's getting a bit complex with the time...So I guess you say that I need to learn more ;-)

    Thanks a lot
