How to add strikethrough formatting? Trados Studio 2024. Source text should be in strikethrough; cannot add strikethrough to target. How?

Bold, Italic, Underline --- these are all available on Trados Studio 2024.

Strikethrough? Not so much. This is a basic formatting feature on any basic word processor. Where is it on Trados?

When my source text is strikethrough, the target segment also automatically reflects that. So Trados can do it. But when there is an error in multiple source segments and the strikethrough is not detected, what am I supposed to do? Leave a TN in each segment saying "sorry this should be strikethrough?"

Am I really to believe that Trados Studio 2024, with a pricetag several times that of MS Word, lacks much of the basic functionality available on any 1990s word processor.

Thanks in advance!

As translators we are not expected to add any formatting to target, jut to take what was in source. Also the formats you mention work only in some document types, but honestly are better not to be used. In your case, if you see an error in source, place a comment for the customer. We are also not expected to correct errors without informing the customer, methinks.

  • I saw you post the same thing 8 years ago to a similar query.

To which I say: "Keep your opinion to yourself, buddy." As you clearly don't know the details of anyone's work but your own, your reply is unhelpful. Imagine anyone going to go back to their client and saying "Random internet dude said i don't have to do this!"

It's clearly a software problem, i.e. the recognition engine is failing to make sense of the source file. As such, it should clearly have a software solution; i.e. a strikethrough button.

If RWS has the time and inclination to add lackluster AI features to this software, they can add the strikethrough button.

I will die on this hill.

You are mixing things up here. Trados Studio is NOT a text editor. It is a complex software to insert target language in source documents. Editing source documents in terms of layout cannot be done in a CAT tool, not only in TS. When you translate formats like InDesign or Framemaker and add some formatting, the layouter can go crazy, as he'll get gazillions of error messages referring to formatting not known by the software. In formats like xml or xliff you are simply not allowed to add any formatting, as this would destroy the structure of the file. And yes, you can easily tell the customer what your role is. We translate the text and usually are not paid for any layout jobs.

What format are you working on? Is the strike-through present in your source segments? How is your tag view setup? Do you show tags or just formatting?

And this is not my opinion, but just facts how the software is intended to work.

Just to add to what Jerzy has said, which makes sense when you consider how many different formats Trados Studio has to deal with, I think this is more of a workflow question.  Perhaps, if you work for a client who asks you to do more DtP work on the translated files then that's absolutely fine, and also not uncommon. But given this would normally be a chargeable effort over and above the translation the process is probably that you do the work on the source file before translation (important if you translate into 40 languages for example) or just in the target language (important if certain types of formatting are needed for a particular language).

But given many source files prepared by a customer are part of a bigger workflow on their end it wouldn't always be appropriate for the translator to change things that might cause problems when the target files are returned.  So most CAT tools are designed to do just that... reproduce the source formatting in a different language.

If RWS has the time and inclination to add lackluster AI features to this software, they can add the strikethrough button.

    Not really the point.
