I'm having trouble with Trados Studio 2021 => when I plug the source text in, some of it is illegible, a bunch of ?????????? all squashed together.

I've tried changing the font of the source text (Word), but that only cleared up some of the text in Trados.

  • Hi

That may happen when there is a dot operator in your source text. There are two kinds of them that you can't distinguish visually (a Dot Operator and a Middle Dot).

You can do an experiment: open an MS Word file, type 22c5 and press Alt+X. The "22c5" would convert into a dot operator. Copy it and paste into your target segment. Does it produce the same bundle of question marks as you describe above?

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing text '2 kWh' followed by a special character error displaying a string of question marks.

If yes, don't copy the dot operator from your source segment. Instead, type a Middle Dot character by keeping Alt and typing 0183 on the numpad. The Middle Dot looks exactly the same as the Dot Operator but it doesn't cause the issue.

Probably there are other special characters that may cause that behavior which I am not aware of. If so, try to locate the culprit character and replace it with something else. Typically such characters can be typed in different ways. For example kWh translates into
кВт⋅ч in my target language but I can replace it with кВт-ч or even кВтч, etc.
