Compatibility issue between my Trados Studio 2014 and current packages

To whom it may concerned:

My issue is actually not about licensing and installation but I didn't find the right option from the list.

My issue is the following: since my version of Trados Studio is quite old (2014), I've been having compatibility issues for a few years with packages that contain MULTIPLE FILES, namely: I almost always cannot open multiple files at the same time and I obtain an error message instead. Are there any fixes to that issue (which, I assume, must be quite common?). Like downloads, updates or the like?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards,

Nils Amet

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide the exact error message you receive when trying to open multiple files. Also, mention any troubleshooting steps you have already taken to resolve this issue.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello Nils Amet,

It seems like you're experiencing compatibility issues with Trados Studio 2014 when trying to open multiple files from newer packages. This could be due to the outdated version of the software you're using. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve this issue:

Step 1: Check for updates within the application. If there are any available, install them and try opening the files again.

Step 2: If the problem persists, you can try opening the package directly from Trados Studio 2014 by going to File > Open > Open Package, and select the package file.

Step 3: If you're still experiencing issues, it might be worth asking your client to resend the package as there could be an issue with it.

Step 4: If none of the above steps work, consider reinstalling Trados Studio 2014.

Step 5: For the files you've received, add the Termbase (.SDLTB) to your project as a termbase, not as a translatable file. Reference files provided are for information and should not be added to the project.

Step 6: Open the Studio package (.SDLPPX) as a package, which will create a project for you. Add the Translation Memory (.SDLTM) to the project through your project settings. Do not add reference files to the project as they are not intended for translation.

Please note that Trados Studio 2014 is an older version of the software and may not be fully compatible with newer file formats. If the problem persists, you might want to consider upgrading to a newer version of Trados Studio.

  • Hi Nils,

I'm afraid there are no updates or downloads aside those that were already available; actually engineering and technical support for Trados Studio 2014 and MultiTerm Desktop 2014 ended on June 30, 2017. Since this date, services covered under standard maintenance agreements - including technical support, license resets, updates and new patches - are no longer available.

The compatibility issues were bound to happen since Trados 2014 hasn't been updated after June 2017 at all, and we cannot guarantee that Trados 2014 can open file types versions that came after we stopped maintaining it.

You can read about the life cycle of Trados editions here: gateway.rws.com/csm

My suggestion is to move to the latest edition of Trados, to avoid these issues.

    Best regards,

    Anca

The trouble you have can only be solved by using the newest version of Trados. Please bear in mind, that not only Trados format has changed. There has been changes in all major file formats, starting with Office... You cannot expect a software developed 12 years ago to cope with the current formats.
