Question improvement suggestion: Provide the exact version of Trados Studio you are using and specify if you have already checked for updates or installed any service packs.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

To resolve the issue of not being able to open the .idml file due to it being created in a newer version of Adobe InDesign, you can follow these steps:

**Step 1:** Ensure you have the latest updates for Trados Studio 2022 installed. Check for any available updates within the application.

**Step 2:** Enable the option to process unsupported file versions. To do this, go to `File` > `Options` > `File Types` > `Adobe InDesign CS4-CC IDML` and check the box for `Process unsupported file versions`.

**Step 3:** If you still encounter issues, try re-saving the .idml file in Adobe InDesign using the `Save As` option and select a compatible version (like InDesign CS4 or later).

**Step 4:** If the problem persists, consider recreating the project in Trados Studio and importing the re-saved .idml file.

**Step 5:** If you are still unable to open the file, you may need to ask the author of the .idml file to provide a version that is compatible with your version of Trados Studio.

Regarding updates, native support for InDesign 2023 IDML files is planned for release, so keep an eye out for announcements from RWS regarding new updates.

  • Hi all,

in Trados 2022 SR2 - 17.2.12.19268, the error message that appears in the German version is misleading: It says "the selected ICML file..." instead of "IDML file".

Error message in German stating that the selected ICML file was created with a newer version of Adobe InDesign, which is not yet supported. The file type is IDML v 1.0.0.0.

I know how to proceed, but wanted to let the RWS folks know.

    Best regards

It is a bit confusing, but probably technically correct.  An IDML package is a ZIP of XML parts.  Text stories inside it follow the ICML schema (InCopy Markup Language).  The IDML being parsed probably contains stories (or linked InCopy stories) with a newer ICML version than the Trados IDML filter supports.  So the parser tries to read the stories but throws a version-mismatch error, and then tells you where the source of the problem lies... the InCopy stories.

So it looks as though the IDML was exported from a newer InDesign build, or it includes InCopy-linked .icml stories saved by a newer build, and the Trados IDML parser rejects the story version.

Was your solution to check the box to ignore the supported versions only?  Or something else?

  • Hi  ,

Thanks for the explanation. I understand that it has its reasons technically, but for a "normal" user, it is rather confusing to get a message about ICML while they want to process IDML.

My solution was to check the box, I've known that solution for long, but had forgotten to do so in my project template. In my opinion, it should be checked by default, avoiding many users who only occasionally translate InDesign files to call me and ask for help Wink

    Have a great weekend!

    Best regards
