Edit source not available for some segments

Hello,

I'm translating a document with mistakes in some source segments, so I'm using the option "Edit source" to correct them before I save the translation in my TM.

The strange thing is, while this option works well for some segments, it is greyed out and not available for others (see screenshots).

I checked and the case "Allow Source Edition" is activated in my Project Settings, so that is not the problem.

I know I can check the source document before I load it in Trados, but that is very time consuming for a handful of segments that I want to correct.

I'm working with Trados Studio 2024.

I find this quite intriging, so if anyone would know the source of this strange behaviour, that would be greatly appreciated Blush.

Thank you in advance,

Katleen

Question improvement suggestion: Provide specific details about the segments where "Edit Source" is greyed out, including any patterns or commonalities among them.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello Katleen,

Thank you for your question! It sounds like you're encountering a common issue with the "Edit Source" feature in Trados Studio 2024. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot the problem:

    **Step 1:** Verify Project Settings

Ensure that the "Allow Source Editing" option is indeed activated in your Project Settings. You can check this by going to Project > Project Settings > Project > Allow source editing for supported file types.

    **Step 2:** Check Segment Status

The "Edit Source" option may be greyed out for segments that are locked or have tracked changes. Confirm that the segments you are trying to edit are not locked or part of a document with tracked changes.

**Step 3:** Review File Type Compatibility

Make sure that the file type you are working with is supported for source editing. As per the information available, source editing is not available for ITD files.

**Step 4:** Examine Project Package Restrictions

If you are working with a project package sent by a client, it's possible that the package has restrictions that prevent source editing. You may need to discuss this with your client to see if they can enable this feature.

**Step 5:** Test with Different Segments

Try to identify if there are specific segments where the "Edit Source" option is consistently greyed out. This could help in understanding if there is a pattern or specific issue with those segments.

If you follow these steps and still encounter issues, it may be beneficial to explore further or consult with your client regarding the project settings.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

    Type of file?

Full screenshot showing the statuses etc... you can blur out the content itself as that's not interesting.

Is the problem all within the same file?  So you can edit some segments but not others in the same file?

What type of project - created by you in Trados Studio or is the file originating from somewhere else?

  • Dear Paul,

it is a Word file, and we have had the same problem with other Word files.

We receive the Word files from our colleagues, load them in our existing project (a local project on our computer), translate them and then send the translated Word document back to our colleagues.

I can edit some segments, but not others in the same file. The segments are not locked or anything, they have the status Not Translated. There are no track changes either.

However, I noticed later on that the segments I cannot edit, are part of a paragraph that has a comment in the source file. I cannot delete those comments, because my colleague needs them in the translated file as well. However, just for test purposes, I made a copy of the file without the comments and now it is possible to edit all segments. So I suspect it is somehow related to the existence of comments in the source document.

    Kind regards,

    Katleen

  • Addition: none of the segments that are part of the paragraph with a comment in the source file can be edited.

Good detective work!  I believe this is because Studio is most likely protecting these paragraphs to avoid the comment being deleted.  If you extract the comment for translation then it is possible to edit the content as the tags are protected from deletion and the comment itself is also editable.

    So this:

Trados Studio editor view showing a WordprocessingML v. 2 file with a poem-like text. A right-click menu is open, displaying options like 'Change Segment Status' and 'Concordance Search'.

    Compared to this:

Trados Studio interface with an open WordprocessingML v. 2 file. A tag protection warning is visible, and the right-click menu shows options for editing and segment actions. The bottom pane displays confirmation statistics.

So if you need to edit segments like that you need to prepare your project with the source comments extracted.

  • Dear Paul,

Extracting the comments did the trick!

We usually don't extract them (because they don't need translation), but it's good to know that extracting or not extracting makes a difference.

Thank you for your help and have a good week,

    Katleen
