Segmentation rules in German version of Trados 2019

Hi, I use the German version of Trados Studio 2019 and have transferred to a new computer. Unfortunately my segmentation rules are no longer working properly, especially

1) no longer segmenting on a sentence basis (even though I have set "Sentence-based" segmentation in language resources) and
2) within numbers (where it is segmenting in the middle of numbers due to the use of thousand-place full stops in German numbers.

Where can I find the standard/default full-stop segmentation rule for the German version of Trados 2019?

Many thanks, Greg Vanes

Question improvement suggestion: Provide specific details about any error messages encountered or any troubleshooting steps already taken to resolve the segmentation issues.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello Greg,

To address the segmentation issues you're experiencing in the German version of Trados Studio 2019, please follow these steps:

**Step 1:** Open your Translation Memory in Trados Studio.

**Step 2:** Right-click on the TM and select **Settings**.

**Step 3:** Navigate to **Language Resources** and select **Segmentation Rules**.

**Step 4:** Click on **Edit** to access the segmentation rules.

**Step 5:** Look for the **Full stop** rule and click on **Edit**.

**Step 6:** In the **Advanced View**, you can modify the segmentation rules. To prevent segmentation after numbers, you may want to add exceptions. Click on **Add** to create a new exception.

**Step 7:** In the **After break** dialogue box, you can add the string `\xa0` to handle non-breaking spaces if necessary.

**Step 8:** Ensure that the segmentation is set to **Sentence-based** and review any other rules that may affect how segments are created.

If you want to specifically address the issue with thousand-place full stops in German numbers, you may need to create a custom segmentation rule that accounts for this. You can do this by adding a new segmentation rule and using regular expressions to define when to segment.

**Step 9:** After making the necessary changes, click **OK** to save your settings and close the dialogue boxes.

**Step 10:** Reopen your document to see if the segmentation behaves as expected.

If you continue to experience issues, please check if there are any specific error messages or behaviors that could provide further insight into the problem.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

So German is the source language, right?

Open the Settings (of you have several TMs on that project, select the TM at the top TM) and click on the button Language Resources > German SegmentationReset to Deafults button:

Trados Studio Translation Memory Settings window showing Language Resources selected, with Segmentation Rules dialog open and Reset to Defaults button highlighted in red.

Click on OK a couple of times. Then you’ll need to remove the source file from your project, and add them back again so the new segmentation rules kick in.

  • Hi Jesus, Thanks for the suggestion, but resetting to the default for the full stop rule hasn’t helped. Segmentation is still being based on paragraphs and not sentences.
I use the system with German masks, so I always have to try to find the equivalent one in German. But yes, my source language is always German. Do you have any other idea How I can back to sentence based segmentation? Regards Greg Vanes

All files or just one? What kind of fie are you translating?

If you create a new TM, default rules, add it to your settings and make sure it’s at the top of your list… and activated… then create your project again. Does that work?

if not you should check how you are creating your projects and with what template.
