Source and Target show different size text

Hi,

I am working on a new computer after accidental damage on my previous one last week and trying to get over the loss of data...and all the fun moments when setting up a new computer...and keep having stressful niggles. This is the latest :

After a coffee break, the display (Trados Studio 2019) suddenly appeared uncomfortably large on my Editor Window. I tried to resize used both the Font view menu in Studio and also the generic Windows "Ctrl -" shortcut on my keyboard.

I am not sure what went wrong, but I am now unable to reset the Font/Display as showing the same size in Source and Target. I tried the Options-Editor-Font adaptation option several times, to no avail. It wont keep the settings/wont Save.

I have tried to start a new project from scratch and the problem persists. It is very unsettling as the target font is tiny compared to the Source displayed font. I worked on a first project before this one on this new computer (running Windows 11 latest version) and did not have that issue. It still displays normally, but every new project I am trying to create as a turnaround seems to carry the problem over. I have not updated the licence due to time constrains (and complete exhaustion after data loss and having to start a previous job from scratch...I know...) therefore using the trial version. Would it make a difference to update my licence (I need to look into deactivating it on the old computer and not sure how complicated or lengthy that may be so I thought I would do that over the next few days). Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in anticipation,

Corinne

Please reset the user profile. Go to File -> Setup -> User profiles and reset the user profile. When asked to backup the profile, use a decent location and a meaningful name. After that restart Studio. When Studio starts next time, reset window layout. With the file opened in Editor go to View and select the option "Reset window layout". This should help. Now you can adapt the font sizes.

  • Thank you  Jerzy, the possible options are

    Change user profile

    Reset user settings

Which one would I go for?

    Thank you!

    emoji
  • Okay , I have deleted these folders and reopened Studio, Reset Layout and tries again to adjust size, and it has made no difference...

However, it seems that it is only the target segments that I have confirmed/already committed to the TM which are affected by the size difference to the Source, the new segments are the same size as the source, so I will get on with it and adjust size if the output font is affected.

On a different note, I am unsure why the system thinks I am on a trial version when it seems like I have activated this licence on this computer 3 days ago (I am sure I deactivated the one on the damaged computer by following the process in my account) but it is unrecognized when I open Studio. I would take any suggestions on this issue too!

    Thank you in anticipation,

    Corinne

From what I read here, it seems you are showing formatting and no tags. In this case font substitution is used. Your source document has been created with a font not present on your system. So Trados replaces the unavailable font by another font according to what MS Windows thinks. This font may however not fit the target, so there will be another font for showing target used. You can have exactly the same font in source and target, when you go to File -> Options -> Editor and chose "show all tags but do not show formatting" in "Formatting display style".

Or did you remove any tags from the target which were present in source?

  • Hi  I did not remove any tags and the font is Helvetica Neue Text, indeed maybe not the most common. The thing is when I started working on the document, there was no such issue, it is only when I tried to reduce the display font and messed around with the Font increase/Decrease and the Ctrl - that the problem appeared...and only on what the TM already had saved... Consecutive segments are unaffected (apart from the ones auto populated).

This is indeed strange. Usually the reset of Studio should help. However, your product is older and I do not remember the correct way to do that. Sorry.

  •  I have just realised, as I am trying to Save the work, that Studio installed in OneDrive (the bain of my life, I want it reoved from my computer as I want to save locally and it keeps acting as the default location of all files!!!)> I had not realised that was the case. Do you know whether I can change the location of the whole programme or whether I should reinstall it on my local drive? I cannot save the work I have been doing today (getting message error when trying to save from Editor) but I can probably save the TM and reimport...at the very least. Sorry to be a persistent error magnet today!

A program cannot be installed on OneDrive, only data is there. If you store your projects, use something else than the Documents folder in your computer. The best way is to have a separate drive for work files. I would strongly advise to put ALL working stuff on drive D:\ in a decent folder structure. Using the Documents folder on a Windows 11 computer means putting all work in OneDrive, at least from what I know.

What kind of error does appear, when you try to save your target translation? And how do you generate your target file?

  •   Yes, so on my previous computers the Programme is installed on C and I assume this is where it is here too. It is just the project folders that have gone into OneDrive...which I cannot wait to remove/unlink, once this is sorted out.

I have copied the new work in progress folder from OneDrive as a backup and copied on local location. I am now trying to find a Studio folder to use and keep all Studio files (and to which the path will be pointing when saving every project from now on). For now I cannot see one, should I create manually a folder names Studio on C? It seems to me that this is usually done automatically when initial install goes to plan? I will check the error message I get when trying to save from Editor, but I think it says it cannot find the path etc..

    emoji
  • It says access to the path (blabla OneDrive) is denied when trying to Save.

  •

TBH there is no such path, as Studio can keep files wherever you want. Having just one path for all projects is something I would never do. What you need is a bit more sophisticated approach.

First, make sure your computer has a second hard drive or a partition on it. This should have the drive letter d:\
If this is not the case, let someone help you to partition your hard drive in order to have the drive d:\

Then create some folders on d:\
    These can be:

    • TM
    • TB
    • Work

In the TM folder keep your TMs. In the TB folder keep your TBs.

In Work folder create a new subfolder for every new job. If you have more than one customer, use this structure:

    • d:\work\customer name

Now create subfolders for work for this customer like this:

    • d:\work\customer name\20251105
    • d:\work\customer name\20251201
    • ...

The names of subfolders consist of year-month-day (yyyymmdd). This way it is easy to keep track of what is going on in your system.

For the error message: chose a different target folder.

  • Thank you! I will do, but have no time today or anyone to help partition and need to get this progressed now...I have tried to create a folder on my local drive for Studio and copy existing files from the OneDrive here, but when trying to create a project from scratch and point it there, it says "the folder already contains some file, please specify an empty folder". I guess in light of your advice I will try again, using different names/creating one for this job in this specific client's folder...hopefully I will get there somehow. Thank you again  for all your help! I think I have at least also managed to sort our my licence issue. Progress made (I think :-)

If any of my advice is helpful to you, I am really glad.

I assume you opened a single file for translation, right? Should you indeed see no chance now to resolve the problem with the existing project, do the following:

    • Create a new folder with a name not used yet, but NOT in the Documents folder! The best would be to create it directly on drive c:\ for now
    • Copy the file with the file name extension sdlxliff from your current project into the new folder
    • Should you not see the file name extension, configure Windows to show it: In the search box on the taskbar, type file explorer, and in the search results, select File Explorer. In File Explorer, select View > Show > File name extensions.
    • Now from within Studio use the command File -> Open -> Translate single document
    • Navigate to the newly created folder, where your sdlxliff file is
    • Open exactly this file
    • If asked for a TM, chose the TM from the previous project
    • When the file is opened, it should be fully translated
    • If so, go to File -> Save target as
    • You should be able to save the target file with no hassle now

  • Thank you. No, I created a Project (or 4... with my multiple attempts to solve issues). I have tested the current solution, and it seems to be working and Saving fine in the newly created local location. I will stick with that as on the verge of a nervous breakdown with a full week of computer disasters (Last thursday some milk spilled in my carrier bag, my laptop got damaged, I lost all my data accrued over the last year following physical damage on my previous computer (only a year old, and unsalveageable apparently) and have not been able to recover the hard drive data (the IT pro helper reckoned I needed to go to a data recovery specialist, which proved to be too expensive after new computer purchase). I had to start the lost job from scratch (I had removed OneDrive from my previous radar due to annoyability factor described above, and therefore had no backup going on). Purchased new laptop, reinstalled, reconfigured, redid the lost job and now starting a new one with all the above issues today. So I will stick with it working for now as cannot face more IT aggro/effort for the day (or week, or month, or year!!)...Just the safe minimum will suit me for the rest of today. Thank you again for all your advice, very helpful (and reassuring to be supported in time of crisis :-)

Sorry to hear you've had so much bad luck. However, even in such situations you don't need to give up in the future.

Please consider the following, not very expensive solution: Buy an external HDD. Install this software https://www.goodsync.com/
This license for it will cost you around 30 EUR per year. Connect your new external HDD to your computer. In Windows Explorer you will see the drive letter assigned to it. Remember that. Now start GoodSync and create a new job. When creating a new job, chose "Backup" (One way job). On the left side chose the folder where your working files are, on the right side chose the external HDD. This job will synchronise your local folders with those on the external drive. If you do that on starting your PC and before closing it, no work will be lost in the future.

This is why it would be advisable to keep all your working files on a drive d:\, as then you would only need to synchronise d:\ with external HDD.

Of course there are better ways to backup your work, but this is the most simple one. You can also automate this procedure by adding a timer to it and so on. But at least make sure to copy all your work to an external drive. Your files are your most important asset and you need to protect them. Please consider this advice for the future.

  • Thank you!

And I spoke too soon, my project does not want to save in Editor, I still get the error message about it not finding the location: It is pointing back the OneDrive to Autosave, somehow (but I am able to save the target file at least, in the new location I have chosen). I hope the TM will save the rest as I work on it, and I can keep on saving the versions of it as I progress, just in case. And will look into the "bigger picture" backup solution. I do have hard drives, so should be able to put that in place when things have calmed down a bit.
