How to create a Bilingual excel sheet after translation is done?

Hi,

I usually receive an excel file to work on Trados and I need to create a English-Japanese bilingual excel file for delivery.

Below is what I want looks like , but

most of the case what I get looks like below;

Could you kindly advise me what to do and if I give you more information, just let me know.

  • The easiest way: use Bilingual Excel file type.
    In Studio 2015, when creating a project, go to File Types BEFORE you add the file.
    Then click on “Additional file types exist”, chose Bilingual Excel, then deactivate or remove the other two Excel file types.
    When done, click the + sign beside the file type name, go to common and set up which column is what.

    When finished, simply finalize your project and that was it.

    You didn't state what version of Studio you're using? The bilingual excel as Jerzy suggested is the best way to handle this, but if you're using Studio 2014 or earlier you won't have this. So in this case just copy your source language to the target column in Excel, then hide the first two columns. Now you'll just get the source language for translation and when you save the target it'll put it into the third column which is the target.

    Thank you . My Trados's version is 2015, so I'm trying to what Jerzy suggested , but ... what do I set up which column is what on setting page of bilingual excel ?

    Well, the filetype options say this:

    So just enter the letter that corresponds to the way the columns are set up in Excel.  If you only have what you showed it'll probably be B & C... but maybe you didn't show the whole file?  Yopu also need to make sure that the Bilingual Excel filetype is above the other Excel filetypes in the list, or disable the others and only use the bilingual version.

  • Hi Paul,

    I understood the setting of columns but the file format I work with is .xls, not .xlsx. Could you tell me if there's any other way?

    Based on what you've said you could always save it as xlsx... but if you don't want to do that you could use this approach:

    Creating a TM from a Termbase, or Glossary, in SDL Trados Studio

    Update : 21 Dec 2015 This article is pretty old now… still interesting, but pretty old.  I think if you are looking for help on how to do this then take a look at the Glossary Converter from the SDL OpenExchange (now RWS AppStore) which can convert a termbase to TMX with a drag and drop!…

    This would require you downsaving to CSV though and I reckon upsaving to xlsx would be a better bet.

    If you don't wish to do either of these things then do this:

    1. Copy your source column into the target column in Excel
    2. Hide all columns apart from the target column in Excel
    3. Translate the file in Studio
    4. Save the target file and unhide the columns

    This works fine unless you already have some translated content in the target column.  If you do then you could use Excel to copy source to target unless there is already target there, but it gets messy.  I reckon your best bet is to upsave to xlsx.
