Please HELP with automatic opening of Termbase in SDL Trados Studio 2015, Auto-Suggest Dictionary and saving server-based TM to a USB as a File-based TM

I have a few questions. How can I set my termbase to open automatically in SDL TRADOS Studio 2015 whenever we open a new document to translate. I need the exact steps! I've researched and tried everything but when I try to follow the steps given, I can find the "Tools > Options" buttons. Also, what are the exact steps for saving a Server-based TM to a USB as I File-based TM that I can then use to create an Auto-Suggest Dictionary? And once created, what are the steps for setting the Auto-Suggest Dictionary to open automatically whenever a new document/project is opened?

    When you use the "Translate single document function" (however, I would strongly recommend using only the Project feature in Studio, as it makes it MUCH easier to keep your TMs and TBs tidy), use the "Advanced" button you find at the bottom of the window (see screenshot). When you configure your TM and TB settings there, these will be kept between sessions for the language pair. When you change the language pair, the settings will be then kept for this language pair. Alternatively you can use File -> Options -> Language Pairs to configure Language Pairs, used in this method.

    Nonetheless, please check out the Create New Project method, as you can create project templates then, containing ALL settings you wish.

    What steps do I need to follow for opening and translating a PDF in SDL TRADOS Studio 2015? Can any type of PDF be translated in TRADOS Studio 2015?

    Thank you, Jerzy! I will try doing this on the "Project" feature as you've recommended. Last time, I couldn't figure out how to do it, but I'll try again. Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi Maureen,

    PDF's suffer from varying quality, and some are image based, some not. In theory you can open any PDF in Studio, even image based, and translate it. But in practice it would be foolish to assume it's that simple because of the variations.

    If you do a lot of work with PDF files you'd be well advised to invest in something like Abby FineReader and always convert your PDF files to cleaned up Word documents first. Then translate the Word documents... you could save yourself a lot of angst working this way.

    For the occasional file, give it a try and see. Sometimes Studio handles them brilliantly!

    The steps for translating ALL file formats in Studio are always the same. Either you use the "Translate single document" method and simply point Studio to the file stored on your computer, or you add the file(s) within the corresponding step of the project creation. Of course only file types supported by Studio will open for translation, but the variety of different file types supported is quite huge.
    As for PDF, Paul already kindly pointed out, that this file format may be extremely tricky. When you open such file in Studio, it is really a good advice to look closer at the conversion results. To do so the easiest way is to open the PDF, wait until it is converted in Studio, then go to File -> Advanced Save and chose "Save source as". Then you store the file as DOCX. Close the file you have in Studio and open the DOCX in Word. If the conversion result is satisfactory, process the DOCX now instead of the PDF. If the conversion needs some tidying, do so in Word, save and process in Studio. However, the conversion may also be totally crap - then use a decent OCR software (I do not recommend using of any automated PDF converter, as the results will then be not much better than in Studio).

    Let me add to Paul's advise that translating a PDF should always remain the exception, meaning that you should always ask your client first if he cannot provide the editable document from which the PDF was created. Only in cases where this is really not possible, should you then work directly with the PDF.
    Often customers don't provide the editable document because they do not know that PDF is not an editable format or because they are too lazy to search for the editable document. Insisting (and telling the customer that starting from the PDF will be more expensive due to the additional work involved) sometimes helps a lot.
