The TM updated only once

Hi everybody,

Behind my question of December and the reply received, I have seen that the TM updated only once. All projects made after my question, have been creating to using « prepare without project TM » for the automatic update or using « prepare », and update with Main TM.

I can use the TM partially, but I can’t use for update the new translated segments.

In the same way, I have tried to group the TM with « Upgrade the TM » but the TM exported are composed from one source TM.

Could you help me, please?

Best regards

If you work with Project TMs, you need to either finalize your project once you have finished the translation or run the batch task "Update Main Translation Memories", otherwise all the segments you confirmed will be in the Project TM, but not in the main TM.

If you don't really need a Project TM for a specific reason, I suggest you prepare your projects without a Project TM. It makes life much easier and limits the risk that some translations don't end up in your main TM.

  • Using this thread to mention I have exactly the same problem. I have been working for months with the same TM and nothing is updated, even though I finalize the documents on a 100% complete translation.
Another great frustration is not being able to use upLift even though I bought Studio 2017 when it was released.

Last but not least, I have just spent hours watching different videos, looking at quick start guides and so on, and nothing is clearly explained for the TM. How does the TM end up being updated? I wish there was something easy for new users that are still struggling after months, and who can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a complete training. I'm a freelancer and don't earn enough to justify this expense.

    Thanks for your help.

It sounds to me as though you are using Project TMs and not looking in the right place for the updates.  If you can drop me an email with your skype details we can look at this now together?  pfilkin@sdl.com

  • Hi Paul,

thanks for the offer. Unfortunately my work PC is not equipped with a camera or microphone, so we won't be able to share much.
This is where my SDL trados is hosted.
I have been using the same TM for both projects and single files but I am getting a better understanding of what the problem could be, after a lot of research and looking at past conversations here. I finalize all my documents once the translation is complete, I don't go through the verification and sign-off process, and not sure how to do that either. Since I'm a freelancer and using SDL on my own for different clients, I never did that. Where can I find that process clearly explained ?
  • Hi

    1. You do not need to finalize a project if you don't want to.  All it does is these things:
      • updates the Main Translation Memories
      • saves out the target files
      • closes the project
    2. You don't need to go through any sign-off process unless you choose to use this to help you see what you have reviewed on a second, or third pass through the translation for your own benefit

If you have a TM attached and set to update, and if you confirm your translations as you work then all your work will be in the TM anyway.  I suggest you do these things:

    1. Make sure that your TM has the "update" box checked in your Project Settings (not File -> Options)
    2. Hover over the name of the TM and see the location.  Make sure you are checking the correct TM when you look at it to see how many TUs are in it
    3. In your Project Settings do you see two TMs for every one you added... with one indented slightly below the other?  If you do then you have used a project TM and this will only contain confirmed translations for that project.  If you run the update Main TM batch task, or finalize then that action will update your Main TMs too.

Perhaps you can share some screenshots of your settings and this may help us to help you.

You won't need a camera... I only need to see your screen.  I can also call you on the phone while we do this if you like?

  • Hi Paul,

I have checked all these points above and everything seems to be in order.

For most projects or single files, I have always done this (I think).

Please find the screen capture for my current project settings. I have checked my global main TM (ENtoFR) that remains empty whatever I do, and created a new one for this project, hoping it might work better (ITL -EN to FR).

I am now at the review process and need to finalize my files today - hopefully my TM will be updated as well but somehow I doubt it. I never has in the past, only when I first created the TM for a very small file.

I do not see two TMs, and never have. So I guess I have followed the proper steps before.

Let's see how it goes this time.

    Cheers

  • Hi ,

    Also check two other things:

First make sure that all your segments have been confirmed.

Second, I note that you have created a multilingual project and so one thing you might have done is added TMs for FR (France) for example, but actually translated the language pair going to FR(Canada). In this case nothing will get updated because you translated into one variant and didn't have TMs for that variant in your project. Worth checking!!

If you did this in error, and I suspect you did, then remove the TMs from your project, then add them back again using AnyTM. This will allow you to update them for both variants without the ned for separate TMs.

  • Hi Paul,

thanks a lot for your feedback. That might be the explanation, so I will follow your guidelines and check this more closely.
Not sure why the FR(Canada) keeps coming up, might be because my first projects were for a Canadian customer and it has been set as a default somehow.
I will let you know if I manage to save my TM this time as I am finishing my current project.

    Cheers

  • Hi Paul,

you were right, I had my TM set to FR(France) and I was translating in FR(Canada).
    So that explains it.

I followed your guidelines, removed the TMs and selected AnyTM. I have finalized the project but now this new TM is nowhere to be seen. I'm totally confused. It has not saved anything, and I can't even find the TM in my files.
I guess I missed a step somewhere. I am giving up for this project honestly.

What happened is that it generated the translated files twice, in a fr-CA folder and in a fr-FR folder. Not sure I understand what happened there.

The only thing I can do now is start everything all over again correctly for the next project.

Thanks for your support anyway, I appreciate it.
