How do I get Studio 2015 to remember the window size the next time I open the application?

This may seem like a trivial question, but it is a daily annoyance and I haven't been able to find the solution myself. For the past year or so (possibly since the last Studio upgrade?) I have had to manually resize the main window every time I launch the application. No matter what I do, it opens in the top left corner of the screen, at about 3/4 of the screen height and 1/2 of the screen width. My main monitor has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, and I have a secondary monitor with a resolution of 1280 x 1024. I am running Windows 10 Home on a Core i5-6600 CPU. All suggestions are welcome!

  • Hi Ben

I'm sorry about the link, but the problem is that it leads to a post in the beta forum, to which you don't have access. I would have made a screenshot of it, but this is not feasible because it is a quite lengthy discussion that does not fit in a screenshot.

About the language: which display language do you use on your English Windows 10? Is it also English or is it Dutch. The problem is linked to the "list separator", which you can change in "Control Panel - Regional settings".

What you can also do as a workaround is to edit the file "Usersettings.xml" in "C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\12.0.0.0" as described here:

  • Walter!

Thanks for posting this. Very helpful!

    This is what I found:

First I checked the Bounds delimiter in my UserSettings.xml file, and the comma is used, which you said is what it should be for Studio 2015, so I was initially disappointed.

Then I checked my Windows regional settings. This is what I found:

So although I am using the English version of Windows 10 Home and SDL Trados Studio 2015, I had the Region Format set to Dutch (Netherlands).

As soon as I set it to English (United States) and restarted Studio, the WINDOW SIZE STAYED THE SAME!

Now, obviously, I'll have to see whether changing the regional setting to English (United States) creates some other annoyance...

I hope this additional information may help someone else or perhaps help the Studio development team resolve the problem.

Thanks again for your help everyone! Now I'd really better get back to translating...:)

  • Hi all,

Just want to post an update on my experience with this issue:
    - My original problems was that Studio 2015 (12.0.4996.3) would not start with the application window size last used on a system with the English version of Windows 10 Home with the region set to Dutch (Netherlands).
    - As I reported previously, changing the region to English (United States) eliminated this problem.
    - Having reread Walter's last post, I realized that I overlooked the last sentence concerning manual replacement of the delimiter in UserSettings.xml. So I changed the regional settings back to Dutch (Netherlands), which is my personal preference, and manually changed the delimiters from commas to semicolons. Now everything is working exactly the way I want it to.

A big thank you to Walter!

  • Unfortunately I was too quick to cheer...
This is what ACTUALLY happens (with English Windows 10 Home, SDL Trados Studio 2015 (12.0.4996.3), and regional settings set to Dutch (Netherlands)):
    - I start Studio and reposition/resize the window.
    - I close Studio.
    - I change the "Bounds" delimiters in UserSettings.xml from commas to semicolons.
    - I open Studio and the window has the same position and size as when I last closed it (the "desirable" situation).
    - When Studio is closed again the "Bounds" information is overwritten and the delimiters are changed back to commas.
    - The next time Studio is opened it reverts to the standard window size and position.
Oh well. Just have to wait for the fix, I guess.
