Studio 2015 SR2 - Embedded real-time MS Word preview still not working for me

Hello,

I use Microsoft Office 2016 via a Click-to-Run version (Office 365).

I've just installed the latest release (SR2) and was looking forward to seeing the in-built Word preview working.

However, I get the message "Your version of Microsoft Office does not support the embedded preview. Please re-open the file and use the "Microsoft Word" preview." (See full error log below).

This is not a big problem, as I can use the external Word preview, but it would be handy and, according to the Release Notes, it should work.

Did you use the new file type "Microsoft Word 2007-2016" to convert your source document. The HTML preview only works with this filetype.

Thanks for your reply, Walter.

Yes, I've been using the newer MS Word 2007-2016 filter since SR1.

I'm not having any problems with the new HTML preview (although I don't find it particularly useful for Word docs, as it's not WYSIWYG).

I also have no problems with the live external preview that opens in a separate Word window, which I'm happy to continue using for the time being.

My problem is with the Word embedded preview that is supposed to appear inside the Studio preview window. This didn't work for Office 365 Click-to-Run users and SR2 promised a fix.

I'm sure this is just a teething problem, so I thought I'd better report it.

Hello Sam,

The problem is you are using a Click-to-Run version of Office and this version does not contain anything that we can hook into to achieve the same kind of preview that was previously available when you installed the old MSI version of Office. So the solution for this is the HTML preview, or to use the View-In method and review progress in Word itself.

The fix for Click-to-run users is the HTML preview.

I get it now. So that's what the HTML preview is for. Apologies - I misinterpreted the release notes.
That's fine. The View-In method is pretty good, until such a time as I decide to revert to an MSI version.

Hi Sam

I would also want to revert to an MSI version, but as it seems Microsoft does not release such versions anymore. So just FYI: even the Office 2016 Pro version does not include the components needed for the embedded preview anymore.
In essence, this means that the only way to get an MSI version is to install a pre-2016 version. And that we'll have to live with the newly developed HTML real-time preview in the future.

Hi Walter,

Gosh, I didn't realise Microsoft had discontinued MSI versions! Oh well, as you say, we'll just have to make the most of what's available.

I actually don't mind the dynamic Word preview that opens outside Trados - at least it's WYSIWYG and the focus moves in sync with the matching segment. (I’m hoping similar preview modes will be developed for Excel and PowerPoint.)

Thanks for the heads-up. It'll save me scrabbling around in vain for MSI Office versions!

Hi Paul! Would you recommend uninstalling the Click-to-Run version of Office and installing a MSI version of Office 365? Can this fix the problem with the embedded preview? I just installed SR2. Do you anticipate any problems if I install a MSI version? Thank you!

To my knowledge there is no MSI version of the new Office (whether 365 nor retail 2016), at least not for the non-Enterprise offerings.
It means that we'll have to say bye-bye to the "embedded preview".
This is the reason why SDL developed the HTML preview, as a substitute for the embedded preview and not as a an alternative:-)
