Hidden text as placeable

Hi,

I want to convert certain texts into placeables, so that it cannot be changed and inserted as with just a click. There s this method of making the text hidden and then import the file, but this only solves the problem partially.

Say we have these phrases:

I recently bought a product, LaserJet M11, which I’m very satisfied with.
LaserJet M11, which I recently bought, is very useful.

where I want "LaserJet M11" to be a placeable. Studio will only import it as placeable in the first phrase, where it is preceded and followed by visible text. As for the second phrase, it will only import ", which I recently bought, is very useful.", ignoring LaserJet M11, because the phrases starts with this very placeable.

This phrase is now ambiguous: what is it that I bought and is very useful? Of course, I have the option to display everything using the All content feature in the Display filter, but how do I always know that something was skipped in that phrase?

Moreover, suppose the translation for "LaserJet M11" is "Imprimanta LaserJet M11" (EN: LaserJet M11). I need to insert the LaserJet M11 placeable after the word "Imprimanta". I can do it in the first segment, but what about the second? I can't, since I don't have the placeable to insert... Translating just the remaining part of the phrase would lead to a translation inconsistency and I must avoid that.

Thank you for any solution to this.

Kind regards,

Bogdan Dusa

  • Hi Bogdan,

You didn't mention what filetype this is? If it's xml you have some control over how this tag could be handled, if it's not xml then you might have to display all content as opposes to all segments with the display filter and then you can get access to these tags which have been externalised.

  • Hi Paul,

You're right, I should have mentioned this: it's a Word document. For xml / Excel documents it'' s easier as you have the Embedded content feature,  where you can define tags, but not for word...

Yes, I can have access to all tags using the display all content option, but this doesn't solve my problem :

Suppose I copy the tag now displayed and insert it into segment 2. In Studio, the translated segment 2 would look like this: "Instrumentul {LaserJet M11}, pe care....". But when I Save target as, I will have "{LaserJet M11} Instrumentul {LaserJet M11}, pe care....". And that because, obviously, my phrase starts with the {LaserJet M11} tag, which is unacceptable.

In a nutshell: I don't want Studio to exclude the starting tag when importing the file. I want it to import this tag as part of the segment to translate, so that I can deal with the word order. Thank you.
