I keep getting the following error message when I copy/cut text in SDL Trados Studio Freelance 2014. I'm losing a LOT of time because of this… Is there any way to solve this problem?

Here is the error log:

    Hi again Jerzy,
Well it turns out you were right, reinstallation didn't help, the problem came back.
It worked fine for more than a day and it suddenly reappeared.
I tried to reset my user profile as you suggested but I still get that error message. I have huge files to handle and a lot of copy/paste to do and it is slowing me down a lot…
If anyone else have a suggestion, feel free to share it it is driving me crazy… I have hundreds of segments in which I have to copy/cut text, and every single time I get that error message...

    No idea anyone?
This is seriously annoying and time consuming… And of course there is no way to contact sdl support in my case! I feel like I just wasted my money here :(

Of course there is.  If your problem occurred after an update and the software no longer works then this is really an installation issue.

For licensing or installation issues that prevent you from working we have a route for all customers to get help. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

Just fill in the form and submit it. If you can, use the Chrome browser to log the case, you'll get more success in completing the form, and make sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you.

Thank you for your reply. I tried this URL earlier but it didn't work, I now realise my adblocker prevented it from loading.
On a side note, there's no mention whatsoever of this link in my SDL account, and useful links and features are too hard to find with all those websites…
Anyway, thank you again for your help, I will fill in the form now.

I have just submitted the request, let's just hope I'll find a solution before being late on my projects…

Someone from SDL customer service took control over my PC for one hour or so, and did not find the source of the problem. However, it seems it's not coming from the update…
The person suggested that it was coming from a faulty Windows 10 installation and recommended that I repair the installation.
Therefore I finally found the time to do so between two projects after making all the necessary backups.
I reinstalled Windows 10 Pro and directly installed Trados 2014 to check that no other software was interfering.
    Basically, I have installed:
    -SDL Trados 2014
    -Mozilla Firefox
    -Mozilla Thunderbird
    -Office Business 365
    -Adobe Flash Player
    -FileZilla
    -ESET Smart Security
All are official versions (not cracked). I also checked while the antivirus/firewall was totally deactivated.
Besides I have never had any problem with other software. The only one that keeps giving me error messages is… Trados 2014.
So as I said, I feel like I wasted a few hundreds euros for nothing since I can no longer work properly with it. I'm losing huge amounts of time. I'm definitely not about to pay for an upgrade to get the same problems.
  • I had the same problem with Studio 2015 and found the reason. I use Punto Switcher program for auto switching keyboard layout EN<>RU. The program tracks the clipboard. To resolve the problem I had to switch the programm OFF. So you can find a program which process the clipboard. Good luck!

Hi Alexander, thank you for your reply. I don't use Punto Switcher however I sometimes use the Windows Language Preferences icon that appears in the task bar to switch keyboard layout. The only program I can think of that accesses the clipboard is ccleaner. I'm currently using the trial version of Studio 2015 and I haven't encountered the error message yet, but I'll try and uninstall ccleaner if I get the error message again.
  • Mathieu

I don't think that CCleaner is the culprit. I use CCleaner and never had any problem with the clipboard. I also don't see why CCleaner should mess around with the clipboard, it's not part of the tasks of this utility.

Hi Walter. Thanks for your reply, I've been using CCleaner for years as well and never had any problems either. And CCleaner does erase the clipboard when you run the cleaning tool so dealing with the clipboard is part of its functions.
Anyway after everything I tried, I am now pretty sure the culprit is Trados itself (the problem happens even when Trados is installed on a fresh Windows 10 installation). It is the only program I'm having problems with whereas I am running many other programs, some of which are much more demanding BTW.
I believe it may be a compatibility issue with my hardware, but then again it is the only program that fails when I try to copy/cut text, it is not my fault if it is not properly designed ! Hence my conclusion: SDL Trados Studio is the culprit.
So, to sum it up, I paid for Studio 2014 but it is now useless/counter-productive.
I was granted a 12-month trial for 2015 and I get the same error messages, so useless as well.
The SDL person I was in contact with hasn't replied my last message (that was more than 15 days ago).
I've lost all hope that SDL will actually try and help me, I am now focusing on trying to find a new TAO tool.

Update: this is definitely not a hardware compatibility issue as I moved from a Haswell build to a Skylake build (new motherboard, new CPU, new SSD, new RAM, new GPU...) and I am still getting the error messages, even with Studio 2015. It happens less often but the problem remains anyway, and I still feel like I wasted my money as SDL simply ignores the problem.
  • This is also definitely NOT a SDL problem. There must be another software running on your PC, which does interfere with the clipboard operations. Please check all programs, which could use clipboard - like dictating software or similar. The culprit will be there, not in Studio.
BTW, did you reset your user profile in Studio and maybe renamed the folder SDL Trados Studio, which you can find in your user account in AppData, Roaming settings?
The error message points to an external operation.
