Is 128GB SSD good enough to improve Studio 2015's performance in terms of speed?

Dear Studio 2015 users,

For those of you who have SSD in your computer, I would like to know if getting a higher-end computer that comes with a 128 GB SSD will make a difference in the time it takes to start up a computer and to open large files from a Studio project. (Some of my clients like to send large, merged sdlxliff files which take a long time to open in Studio.)

I found a computer that seems to be good, but I am not sure about the 128 GB SSD part. Can someone shed some light on this?

Using a SSD instead of a magnetic hard disk will definitely improve the performance of your PC. Windows will boot faster and programs will launch faster. I would say that with the decrease in price of SSDs, it has now become state of the art to buy computers equipped with SSDs.

What you need to carefully analyze however is the volume of data you are going to deal with. Keep in mind that your system partition, which contains the OS and all your applications, will take up something between 40 - 70 GB. This means that it will not leave you much free space for data files.

Looking at the configuration you quote, I see that you also have a large magnetic hard disk, so you can store some of your data files there.

The combination of a SSD for the OS and applications and a magnetic hard disk for file storage is a good one. I would nevertheless recommend that you take a model with a SSD of 256 GB instead of 128 GB, simply because SSDs with higher capacity are faster (I recommend to avoid 128 GB SSDs). This should not make a huge difference in price. In addition, it will give you enough room to be able to store the large files you mentioned also on the SSD instead of having to put them on the hard disk.

Same as my machine, but the specs in US seems to be better for less money, as usual :(
My machine has the i7 6700 k, but "only" 24 GB of RAM and 256 SSD. There is a "better" nVidia card in my (960) - if we can talk about a better nVidia, as all these cards provide much worse picture than ATi... Nonetheless, the overall performance of the PC is right for some 3-4 years of Studio-ing our jobs :)

Thank you for sharing your specs, Jerzy! I am using a Win 7 machine with 6 GB Ram, with no SSD, so I am really looking forward to the arrival of the new computer.
I am hoping the migration from Win 7 to Win 10 will not be too much hassle, although I am prepared to pay and upgrade some of the other programs, such as Translation Office 3000.
Speaking of better for less money, well, what can I say? The prices on Amazon here are really amazing. Similar models on other sites were $300-500 more.
I don't know anything about nVidia card--is this the graphic card? I thought it's more for gaming...

nVidia is the graphics, indeed. I would very much have preferred an ATI graphics card, but these were not available with the XPS machines, which are made for "gamers".
As for Win10: not a big deal, when you change from Win7. You will need some time to adapt, but Cortana makes that quite easy.
Translation Office 3000 runs with Win10 in my case - no problems at all.

Make sure, Windows is installed on the SSD. But in case of the XPS from Dell, it will be there. So when you install Studio, it will also go to the SSD.
But having Studio installed on the SSD is not the ultimative speed experience.
IN your case, as you have 512 GB on the SSD, I would partition it, leavin about 200 GB for Windows and programs, and have the remaining part for TMs and TBs. When you place your TMs and TBs on that second part of your SSD, Studio will run indeed faste, even if the data will be on another drive.
In my case Studio is on the SSD, TMs and TBs on the local HDD - my Dell has just 256 GB on SSD, so the TMs and TBs are on the 2 GB drive there. All other data - project files and so on - are on a NAS. Even the project TMs are on the NAS. And the overall performance of this system is good.

Hi Jerzy,

I save pretty much everything in the C drive including the TMs and TBs. My understanding is by default SSD would be my C drive, which means the Studio TMs and TBs will be on SSD. Do I still need to partition the SSD to get the ultimate speed? (Gee I sound like a gamer:)
