Docx file would not open for translation in Studio

Dear Studio 2015 users,

I received the following error message when trying to open a docx file using translate a single file method in Studio 2015.  I ended up using another tool to complete the task (it imported the file without problems), but I would like to know if there is a fix for this issue so that I can continue using Studio next time.

Thank you.

  • Hi again Chunyi,

    I've never seen that particular error message before but I never work on any translation as a 'single file'. I always work with projects because it is tidier. I always have, ever since Studio and projects began.

    Actually, there is a fix for this on the Knowledgebase:

    kb.sdl.com/.../

    In case for some reason the link doesn't work for you, here is what it says you must do:

    Follow these steps:

      1. Exit Studio.
      2. Go to...

      ...the project file (*.sdlproj)

          •  of the affected project in the folder of the project or located in the same folder where the source file is located when using

      Translate Single Document

          • ...or...

      ...when this issue occurs when editing a project template

          • , go to the affected project template file with

      *.sdltpl

          •  extension.

        • Open the project or template file with a text editor (for example Notepad).
        • Change all occurrences of the string MicrosoftOffice.Common to MicrosoftOffice.Core.Common within the <SettingsGroup Id="WordprocessingML v.2> element:

                  <SettingsGroup Id="WordprocessingML v. 2">
                    <Setting Id="NonTranslatableStyleMappingRules3">

                      <NonTranslatableStyleMappingRule xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/Sdl.FileTypeSupport.Filters.MicrosoftOffice.Core.Common">

                        <StyleName>tw4winMark</StyleName>

                        <TagProperty>Inline</TagProperty>

                      </NonTranslatableStyleMappingRule>

                    </Setting>

          Be sure to repeat this action for all occurrences of this string (by default it occurs four times).
        • Restart Studio. You should now be able to edit the project settings or template.

        (Explanation:

        This error occurs in the following circumstance:

        • In a previous Studio 2015 release (such as Studio 2015 CU3), you accessed and confirmed the Styles settings within the Microsoft Word 2007-2016 file type settings.

        In Studio 2015 SR2, the settings structure for styles has been modified. Normally, these settings are not actively written by the Microsoft Word file type, which is why this issue occurs only rarely. But if you access and change these settings or leave them unchanged, but confirm the dialog box with OK, then the settings are written to the *.sdlproj (project) or *.sdltpl (project template) file. This then causes the error in SDL Trados Studio 2015 SR2 as it no longer expects this settings structure.)

        If you tried the above and this doesn't work for you...

        Since before Studio, if a Word file has caused me trouble, I have always gone back to the original file in Word before taking it to the Project stage. That is where you will be able to create a file that works. This can involve various possibilities, depending on what content is causing the problem. It can be as simple as saving to a new docx file with a different filename or saving to .doc or .rtf, or as complex as eliminating macros, headers, footers, images, imported tables or other '3rd-party' content, in order to create a file that works.

        Thankfully most of these problems are relatively rare now but the thing that has stayed the same is that it is a lot easier to create a file that works on saving to Target BEFORE translation than after. So whatever you try, as soon as you create your Project, save to Target to see if it works. If it doesn't try eliminating some content that could be causing the problem, from a copy of the orginal Word file, and then see if that will save to Target.

        Finally, I find using a project is always the most stable way of working, whatever original format of file you are working on.

        All the best,
        Ali

      1. Hi Ali,

        Thank you for your kind help. Unfortunately I found out just now that this error message occurs with every file I try to open in Studio using the translate the single file method.
        One thing I can think of that may have caused the problem (just my wild guess) is I moved all Studio related files and folders to Onedrive under my C drive instead of using C:\username\Documents. OneDrive is still under local drive, but then it sends my documents to the Cloud which allows me to access these documents from my laptop when needed. I am not sure if this change confused Studio and caused this issue.
        Anyway, I have logged a case with SDL Support and hopefully will hear from them soon.
        Thank you for all of your help!

      2. Hi Jerzy,

        I followed your advice and the issue was gone. Just the first part of your suggestion (reset to defaults) did the trick.
        Thank you so much for your help!

      3. Thank you for the feedback.
        When you moved Studio files, the connection to the "Default" project template was lost and this caused the error.
        The default project template is connected with the settings available via File -> Options -> File Types, this is the reason.
        Moving any files and folders created by the software in Documents is unfortunately not a good idea without having registered that change in Windows. If you hoever right click the Documents folder (for example), chose Properties and change the path registered there, the corresponding programs will not lose the connection to this folder. As stated above, this way I moved my Documents to OneDrive.

      4. Thank you for your advice, Jerzy.
        I checked again and now the Documents system folder in This PC is in C:\Users\cc\OneDrive. I think I am finally sorting out the path issue:)
        Have you noticed any performance issue with Studio projects stored in OneDrive, since this local drive is connected to Microsoft Cloud and data gets updated/synchronized over there? I am still not sure whether this is the optimal setup for working with Studio projects...
      5. No performance issues, however I DO NOT store ANY customer files there. This would breach my NDAs, so I keep all the files on a local NAS. However, I once tried to put my TMs to OneDrive business (1 TB capacity), but failed. The max file size there is 2 GB and I have some TMs which do exceed this size. So I keep 'em local. To make me mobile without having to take the TMs, TBs and so on with me on a HDD/laptop, I now use TeamViewer software to connect to my PC at home. When I am anywhere, I just need a PC with a temporary version of TeamViewer, then I log into my accounbt and can access my PC at home. Of course the same would be possible via VPN and access to my router, but as I am not aware of the necessary settings and also afraid to open too many "holes", I decided to use TV instead.

      6. Hi Jerzy,

        Do you mind helping me with one more question?  I am sure I downloaded the latest version of the Dictionary Plug-in app for Studio 2015 (the verified version), but I get the app not verified message every time I start Studio.  I guess it's probably related to the app not registered in Win10 again.  What can I do so that Studio finds the correct Dictionary Plug-in app to load?

        Thank you.

        Chunyi

      7. Hi Chun-yi,

        Probably good to open a new thread for this in the app store forum...

        This message means you have used a version of the plugin that SDL has not signed, so we have not verified that it is ok for Studio. Did you take this from the SDL AppStore? If so I need to check this because we should only be putting signed plugins on the AppStore.

        So you could load it, but if it's not from the AppStore you should verify you are happy with whoever provided it and also ask them to email app-signing@sdl.com and request for us to sign it.

        Regards

        Paul

      8. In fact I just tested this and I think you downloaded the wrong one. You are directed to the developers site and there he has two links (I think). One to the old Beta version which is unsigned and one to the new signed version. If you took the signed version and it was not signed then you should contact the developer as he controls the download.

        Regards

      9. Hi Paul,

        I did contact the developer a few days ago but haven't heard from him yet.
        I had the same issue when I installed this app on my old machine last time, and the developer gave me a link for the verified/correct one to download. I tried using the link but the app is no longer available.

      10. Hi Paul,

        I did try to create a new thread for this issue, but after typing up the title I was redirected to the previous discussions with similar issues (none of them were related to my issue). It seems I have back luck with this plugin, so for now I will leave it as is.
        If you could give me the link where you downloaded the verified/signed app, that would be helpful.
        Thank you!
