Is it possible to change the display font in Studio 2015 (not just the size, but the font itself)?

Hello,

I am quite new to to Studio 2015.

I have just installed it and I have tried to set up a few basic things, but I am not sure I am doing it correctly. I was wondering if someone can give me some advice.

1) I have tried to enlarge the size of the text in the Translation Results pane.
I go to File | Options | Editor | Translation Results Window and regardless of what I put in Font size, the text displayed is always the same. Why? I need to have it larger so I can see it.

2) I have tried to display the text in the translation source and target panes using a different font I prefer (PTSans for instance).

I go to File | Options | Editor | Font Adaptation
I select Adapt font size and choose minimum and maximum sizes and Adapt text colours (and so far so good).

But I want to use PTSans. So under Custom Language Font, I choose the source and the target languages (as an aside is there any way to just select a basic English instead of faffing about with a zillion variants?) and select PTSans.

But the text continues to be displayed in the same font as before. Why?

Thanks a lot

Lorenzo

  • Hi Lorenzo,

Thanks for posting your question in here.

Easiest way is to use the ribbon controls.  Go to View -> Font Adaptation Group

Mine is a little small as I have too many other plugins squashing up the view, but you'll hopefully get the idea.  To make these controls work you need to activate the top icon and then the bottom two will work to increase or decrease the size of the font Pressing the little dinky "arrow on the bottom right" is a quick way to the font adaptation settings too.

This is the font to be used when editing.  So you would change the target language font and when you type the font used in the editor will be the one you chose.  If you change the source language font then this will be the one you chose.  But make sure you restart the file, so close it and open it again... the change is not real time.  So I just set this for my source language:

This is what I get when I reopen the file:

Afraid not... but hopefully you only do this once!

  • Thanks Paul

    I'm having mixed results

    1) I still cannot change the size of the text in the translation results pane.

    2) After changing the font for the source text, the new font (I have used an odd one for example) only appears on a small number of source segments.

Did I misunderstand you first time.. sorry.  To change the font in the TM results pane you need to go somewhere else:

This is probably because the font controls in the segment itself is overriding your requirement (see the note when you select this option):

Perhaps you would be better off using one plain font for everything?

  • Sorry Lorenzo... I stupidly gave you the wrong image for the TM Results pane... just corrected in the post above.

  • Still no joy, Paul

    Let's go in order.

    TM Results

Changing the TM Results font size, changes the text below the row that I would like bigger. If you look at my original image, I would like to see with a larger font, the word "overview" circled.

If I change "difference formatting" I seem to be able to change only the formatting of the differences but that makes difficult reading.

    Editing grid

Some fonts stick and some don't.

As luck wants, the one I would like to use, does not stick.

I could send you the specific font that does not work, if you want. But why should it not work when it works happily on any other Windows program?

Additionally, am I right to suppose that if I select "Show all tags but do not show formatting" I will not see bold, italics etc?

    Thanks for trying

My bad.  I didn't even notice that pane in your image until just now.  I don't think there is a separate control for this part of the TM Results window.  This is just the source text and not the results, and can be turned on or off, but I don't think you can make the text in there larger/smaller.

This does sound as though it's for the reason I mentioned earlier.  If you press Ctrl+Shift+H do you see more formatting tags appearing in the editor where these segments are?  It sounds as though there are control tags in there and these are overriding the changes you are able to make.  It has nothing to do with the kind of font it is, it's all about the controls where internal tags are overriding the default font... I think!

The only way to resolve that is to remove all formatting, which brings me onto your last point.

Correct.  You'll see the tags that control this formatting, but you won't see it wysiwyg as you are now.  Personally I prefer that mode so the text is consistent and I can apply whatever tags I need, irrespective of what they are for, the same way as I'm working.

So it may be that we just can't do what you want in this case!

That section tells me where the differences are compared to a similar segment in the TM. It's very useful, but it can be very confusing.

    Pehaps not.

Even with "Show all tags but do not show formatting" selected, that specific font is not shown. The display shows the default font.

In this case, the chosen font should be a PT Sans font , looking like this (look at  the lower case l):

The same occurs on a very useful font in the Tahoma family. So, perhaps Studio 2015 does not like all fonts.

It does look that way. Oh well.

    Thanks for trying
