Apostrophes appear in different font and size font in Word document generated by Trados 2015.

When I convert my English to French Canada translations back to Word, the apostrophes appear with a space and in New Times Roman 14 pt, even though everything else is in Arial 10 pt. What is causing this problem? Thanks

  • Were there any tags in the file?
Which Word file type did you use? Using the new WordprocessingML (Word 2007-2016) file type is preferred.

  • Hi, I use Word 2007. No tags in the file.
  • Please recreate the project, using the file type for Word 2007-2016, NOT Word 2007-2013.
I have had seen some apostroph problems recently with the latter one.

  • Just noticed that the last document I was translating that was causing the problem was in Word 2003. To export it from Trados, I can only save it as a Document Microsoft Word 2000-2003.
I did a test by converting the original Word 2003 document to Word 2007 before importing it in Trados. When I exported it in Word 2007, the apostrophes are ok.
The problem only seems to appears with Word 2003 documents.
  • Good you could solve it.
But I think you misunderstood my previous messages.
I do not refer to saving format, but to the file type, which is the definition BEFORE the file is being imported into Studio.
Please refer to kb.sdl.com/.../ - maybe that clarifies a bit.
In a nutshell: BEFORE you add a file to the project, go to File Types and deselect the Word 2007-2013, leaving only Word 2007-2016 selected.

  • I selected Word 2007-2016 only in File Types as you suggested, and deselected all other versions of Word.
When I export the translation back to Word 2003, the apostrophes appear in Arial 14 pt, while everything else is in Arial 10 pt.
  • Thanks :)
I am not aware of such problem in doc files, but maybe some from SDL will be able to look at this.

  • Hi Paul,

Forgive me for trying something simple first. If you press Ctrl+Shift+H in the Studio editor so you see any formatting tags around the apostrophes? Maybe you just need to apply some formatting if it's important to have them in a different font. I must admit it sounds like a PDF conversion issue that makes them different in the first place and this may be unnecessary work on your part to apply formatting to them all separately.

    Regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,
There are no formating tags appearing around the apostrophes in my Trados 2015.
I want everything in the same font, and not have the apostrophes in Arial 14 pt and everything else in Arial 10 pt..
It's a Word 2003 document, and not a pdf conversion.
  • Hi Paul,

ok - would you be able to share the source DOC and also your translated sdlxliff? If so you can email them to pfilkin@sdl.com
