SDL Studio 2015 error message while opening a source text file for translation

Hi  experts,

while attempting to start a single file translation project with SDL Studio 2015, I am getting the following error message:

Here are some details:

1. I wish to translate DE ----> EN (United Kingdom); the source text is in a standard MS-Office 2010 Word file.

2. I have selected: the option " translate single file"; Source language German (Germany), Target language English (United Kingdom)

3. The TM is a file base TM created by Studio 2015 from a previous translation project. - which worked well.

4. If I click OK now, the Studio editor window opens, file loading icon appears but after a while (say 5 seconds), the a.m. error message pops up.

I have retried it 2 times by placing the source file at different locations (e.g. at Desktop etc.) but the same error message occurs.

Where am I going wrong? Can someone help please?

Thanks and best regards

Shyam Gupta

  • Hi Paul,

Kindly allow me to give you some feedback on the a.m. problem.

After I could finished translation of the MS Word, DOCX extension file after converting it into PDF file successfully, I went back to take the original DOCx source file, disabled the file type 2007 - 2013 in studio 2015 file option as you suggested but unfortunately it didn't work. Studio 1025 produced the same error message I have posted in my first report.

Then, just to check,  I disabled  also the file type 2003 - 2007 (please see image)

but even then studio failed to load the file.

So, there must be something in addition that is preventing the file from loading into studio 2015 or translation.

And further, I made another observation, the file can not only be loaded as pdf file type but the loading and translation also succeeds if the Word file type is chosen as "word document with macros". This is - as you certainly already know - besides save as .pdf, file, another "save as" option in MS Word (office 2010).

Thought, this might be of interest for you.....

    Regards

    Shyam

  • Hi Shyam,

Did you recreate the project with this new filetype or just make the change in the original project settings (which will have no effect)? I can take a look at this if you like? You can email me the file - pfilkin@sdl.com

    Regards

  • Hi Paul,

Yes, I did recreate the project with this new file type.

First, I made the changes in Studio 2015 file options, closed Studio and reopened it.
Checked file option settings again, they were and are still the I had opted for, and then recreated the single file translation project. Unfortunately the result was same, i.e. the file didn't load.

Thanks for your kind offer to check the file for me. I am really eager to know what am I doing wrong.
I'll send the file to you just now.

    Best regards

  • Hi Shyam,

Just wanted to close this thread off. As I emailed you the problem is not with you at all. There is a composite image created with Word tools inside a table on one of the pages. Removing this image inside that cell resolves the problem.

If you approve I'll send the single table cell with the image to development so we can resolve it in a future release.

Really like your workaround though, converting to PDF and using that is one I would never have even considered... I will now!!

    Kind regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks for your help - may I request you not to close the thread as yet please.

    Let me explain briefly:

Of course your trouble shooting i.e. "removing the composite figure" allows the file to be loaded and I could complete the translation.

I saved my translation by using the Studio option "save target file under".  A Word file is saved with proper name and extension. This gave me a (at least I thought so) a Word file with translated text.

However, when I tried to open the Word file after translation completion I got the error message:

Then, I opened the Studio editor window again and tried to have a preview of the translated text (in editor window): The preview window displayed the following message:

Quote, "No preview available, Check here for help in trouble shooting this error". Unquote.

A click on help produced the following message:

As I mentioned in my previous inputs, I am using Office 2010 packet for Word.

Thereafter, I tried it a few more times with different inputs (e.g. removed not only the composite figure but also the watermark in the doc etc.) but the result was the same.

On the other hand, the Word files created by the option "save target file under" after translation using a pdf file version of the same source works perfect

So, it seems that removing the composite figure may only be a part of the solution. One can load source Word file,  translate it, but then a target Word file is created which cannot be opened. Thus the whole translation effort is in vain.

Of course, I agree formally that you you can provide the single table cell with the image to development for future releases. However kindly also take my observation described above into consideration.

Paul, if you still by any chance have my source file, I can send you the corresponding TM so that you can try/verify my observations without having to bother about actual translation itself.

    Thanks and best regards

    Shyam

  • Hi Shyam,

If you send me your sdlxliff that would be fine. No need for the TM.

    Thanks

  • Hi Paul,
I have just sent the SDLxliff file (compressed using "7z") to you.
