Formatting of text fields is wrong after export to Word

Hi all,

I have a question regarding the translation of Word documents (.doc) with field functions. After exporting the translation from Trados to Word, the formatting of some text fields has changed.

In the document, bookmarks are used to refer to other chapters and in the original file it looks like this:

"siehe Kapitel 12.1 Zeichnungsliste"

When showing the field codes:

"siehe Kapitel { REF Kapitel_Zeichnungsliste \n \h  \* MERGEFORMAT } { REF Kapitel_Zeichnungsliste \h  \* MERGEFORMAT }"

After translation in Trados, export to Word and updating the document:

"see chapter 12.1 List of drawings" (here the last two words are bold, sometimes the font size has changed as well)

Has anybody had a similar problem and found a solution for this? Is there something in the settings I could change?

We used a different translation tool before and never had these problems.

I am looking forward to any reply.

Thank you and kind regards,

Sara

  • Not exactly an answer, but a related question: how on earth do you get 'Zeichnungsliste' offered for translation in the first place, please? With me, such fields always appear as uneditable tags. Then I end up have to do a search and replace in the target document.
I have searched for settings like 'offer tag content for translation' (in Studio 2015), but can't find anything like that.
  • In this sentence it is a tag as well. In Trados it looks like this:
    "siehe Kapitel [TAG] [TAG]"

However, the bookmark refers to chapter 12.1 and at this place there is a sement in Trados
    "Zeichnungsliste"
When this title of chapter 12.1 is translated, in the Word file all places where the bookmark is used will update with the translated title of chapter 12.1

I would think that these bookmarks/references in most cases refer to some other place in the document that is translatable and can later be updated. Maybe it is something from the document properties?
  • Hi Sara,

First I would make sure I was showing all formatting tags in Studio. So in the editor try pressing Ctrl+Shift+H and see if more tags show up that might explain this.

If that wasn't the answer can you share a word file with just that one sentence in it so we can investigate it? You can add it to this thread or email me - pfilkin@sdl.com

    Thanks
